UNIT OVERVIEW

  • # of LDRP Beds: 14
    (Patients stay in the same room)
  • # of OR Suites (C-Sections): 2
    (RNs circulate and recover)
  • # of Triage Beds: 4 (travelers staff this area)
  • Birth Volume:
    • 90/month
    • 1200/year

STAFFING & RATIOS

  • Follows AWHONN Staffing Standards
  • Labor: 1:1 ratio
    • May pair 2 cervical ripening patients
  • Postpartum: 1:3 couplet care
  • Triage: 1:3 (up to 4 patients with Resource Nurse support)

REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS

  • NRP
  • BLS
  • ACLS
  • STABLE

PATIENT POPULATION / DIAGNOSES

  • ≥32 weeks gestation
  • Hypertension (Magnesium therapy)
  • BACs
  • TOLACs
  • Gestational diabetes (some cases)
  • High volume of home birth transfers
  • Antepartum patients (some)
  • NOT ACCEPTED:
    • Placenta previa
    • Placenta accreta
  • Diverse patient population

SKILLS / EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • Minimum 3 years L&D experience
  • Mother-baby experience (preferred 1 year)
  • Must be able to:
    • Attend deliveries
    • Provide 1-hour newborn care
    • Triage patients
    • Circulate C-sections
    • Provide postpartum couplet care
  • Magnesium experience required
  • Charge nurse experience preferred
  • Must be able to titrate drips

DRIPS / MEDICATIONS

  • Pitocin Protocol (titration)
  • Magnesium Protocol
  • Insulin drips (occasional)

CHARGE / SUPPORT STAFF

  • Admin Supervisor: Every shift
  • Charge RN: Does NOT take assignment
  • Resource RN:
    • Break relief
    • Assists in all deliveries (“baby catcher”)
    • Stabilization & first 2-hour newborn care
    • Second RN sign-off on meds
  • Triage RN: Dedicated role
  • CNA: 1 per shift (may float to HUC role if needed)
  • 1 CST per shift

24/7 SUPPORT

  • OB Hospitalist: 24/7
  • Neonatal NP: 24/7
  • Anesthesia: 24/7
  • Respiratory Therapy: Available for troubleshooting

MONITORING / SYSTEMS

  • No tele techs
  • Tele capability available (rare use; patients usually transferred if needed)
  • EFM System: Centricity

SCHEDULING

  • Shifts: 0700–1900 / 1900–0700
  • Resource/Charge: 0645–1845 / 1845–0645
  • Travelers fill schedule gaps first
  • No guaranteed block scheduling
  • Max consecutive shifts: No 6 shifts in a row

WEEKEND / HOLIDAY / CALL

  • Weekends: No minimum requirement
  • Holidays: No set requirement (may work if needed)
  • Call/Standby: Not required

FLOATING

  • Float to:
    • St. Luke’s Treasure Valley sites:
      • Meridian
      • Nampa
      • Boise
  • Float roles:
    • L&D
    • Postpartum

    • Sitter

SCRUBS / DRESS CODE

  • Hospital-issued scrubs only
  • Must change in/out at facility
