Position Summary:
 

Summa Health Akron Campus is seeking an experienced Medical Surgical Registered Nurse for a night shift contract assignment within a specialized 28-bed acute care Medical Surgical unit focused on geriatric patient care. This unit provides comprehensive inpatient care for patients age 65 and older requiring acute medical management, close monitoring, observation, and interdisciplinary care coordination.

The ideal candidate will have strong Med Surg experience, excellent assessment skills, and the ability to care for a diverse patient population in a fast-paced hospital environment.

Unit Overview

This specialized Medical Surgical unit focuses on age-friendly care principles using the “4Ms” model:

  • What Matters
  • Medication
  • Mentation
  • Mobility

The interdisciplinary team emphasizes prevention of functional decline while managing acute medical conditions and supporting the overall wellness and strengths of older adult patients.

Common patient diagnoses include:

  • Gastrointestinal Bleeding (GIB)
  • Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)
  • Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)
  • Pneumonia
  • Trauma
  • Infections
  • Altered Mental Status
  • Failure to Thrive

Key Responsibilities:
 

Clinical Care

  • Provide comprehensive nursing care for acute Medical Surgical and geriatric patients.
  • Perform detailed patient assessments and monitor changes in condition.
  • Administer medications and treatments per physician orders and facility protocols.
  • Draw blood specimens and independently start and maintain IV access.
  • Monitor patients requiring close observation and ongoing testing.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare teams to coordinate patient care plans.
  • Support mobility, safety, and age-friendly care initiatives for geriatric patients.

Documentation & Compliance

  • Accurately document patient care and assessments within the Epic EMR system.
  • Follow hospital policies, patient safety standards, and infection control protocols.
  • Ensure compliance with medication administration and nursing documentation standards.

Patient & Family Education

  • Educate patients and families regarding diagnoses, medications, treatment plans, and discharge instructions.
  • Provide compassionate, patient-centered care while maintaining professionalism in high-acuity environments.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education

  • Graduate of an ACEN or CCNE accredited nursing program required.

Licensure & Certifications

  • Active RN License required.
  • Current BLS Certification required.

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 years of recent Medical Surgical nursing experience required.
  • Recent Epic EMR experience within the last 12 months required.
  • Previous experience caring for geriatric patients preferred.
  • Must have strong phlebotomy and IV insertion/maintenance skills.

Candidates requesting more than 7 days of RTO will be automatically rejected.

Additional Assignment Details: Floating required based on facility needs. Interview required prior to offer. No block scheduling requests accepted. Maximum of 7 days RTO allowed during assignment. No RTO permitted during the first two weeks of assignment.
