Job Description
Position Title: Cardiovascular Intensive Care Nurse (CVICU RN)
Location: Great Falls, MT 59405
Position Overview
The CVICU RN will provide specialized care for immediate post-operative open heart patients, beginning on their first day of recovery. This role requires advanced critical care skills to manage higher acuity patients in an expanding cardiac services program. The nurse will deliver holistic care - physical, emotional, spiritual, and cultural - while ensuring safe and effective treatment for patients with complex cardiovascular and medical needs.
Patient populations include:
- Immediate post-open heart recovery
- Pre- and post-PCI care
- Pacemaker and revascularization patients
- Carotid endarterectomy, thoracotomy, CHF, COPD, DKA, renal failure, DVT, PE, sepsis
- Pediatric and general medical/surgical patients
The CVICU RN will operate advanced medical equipment including central lines, chest tubes, NG tubes, A-lines, multiple IVs, continuous bladder irrigation, and short-term ventilatory support.
Organizational Relationships
- Receives direction from: Providers, Charge Nurse, ICU Director, CNO
- Gives direction to: LPNs, CNAs, Housekeeping Staff, Dietary Staff
- Works cooperatively with: Providers, Healthcare Professionals, Allied Health Staff
- Team Culture: Collaborative, supportive, and patient-centered
Responsibilities
- Provide direct care from admission through discharge, including discharge planning.
- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care with minimal supervision.
- Recognize and respond to deteriorating patient conditions using critical care tools.
- Act as a clinical leader and preceptor for staff development.
- Ensure compliance with hospital policies, procedures, and standards of care.
Minimum Education and Experience
- Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Degree from an Accredited Nursing Program
- Experience:
- Recent open heart recovery nursing experience required
- Critical Care/CVICU experience strongly preferred
Knowledge & Skills
- Advanced nursing principles and procedures
- Critical care and cardiovascular nursing expertise
- Proficiency in:
- IV pumps, A-lines, invasive lines, chest tubes
- Noninvasive and invasive ventilatory support
- Cardiac telemetry and EKG interpretation
- Strong communication, leadership, and teamwork skills
Licensure & Certifications
- Current State of Montana RN Licensure
- BLS, ACLS, PALS certifications required
