Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - MedSurg Telemetry

Location: Chesapeake, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks (with possible extension)
Shift: Night shift, 4x12 hours (7:00 PM - 7:30 AM)
Hours per Week: 48 hours


Job Description

  • MedSurg Telemetry unit with patient ratios of 1:7.
  • Work includes nights, weekdays, every other weekend (EOW), float, and holidays within the contract.
  • Schedule options: 3x12 or 4x12 shifts (overtime after 48 hours).
  • Must be proficient in EPIC electronic health record system (no exceptions).
  • Required skills: IV start, telemetry interpretation.
  • Experience working with neurology/stroke patients is mandatory.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Virginia.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • Minimum 2 years of Med Surg / Telemetry nursing experience, with at least some experience within the last year.
  • Experience working with neurology and stroke patients.
  • One completed travel nursing assignment.
  • Proficiency with Epic electronic health record system.
  • Current ACLS certification.
  • Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • Current NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.

Health and Background Requirements

  • Government-issued photo ID required and must be carried during hours of service.
  • Background checks:
    • 7-year criminal background check within 1 year of start, updated annually.
    • Zero tolerance for any background or license hits.
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated for renewals.
  • Fingerprinting required via Virginia State Police National Criminal Background Check (VSP), with specific instructions and deadlines.
  • Physical exam within 12 months of start, updated annually.
  • Fit test for N95 mask within 1 year of start; PAPR masks are not allowed.
  • Negative TB test (PPD, QGold, or Tspot) within 1 year; annual testing required.
  • Immunizations and titers required within 10 years or valid declinations for:
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Hepatitis B
    • Varicella (booster required if low/equivocal titer unless working outside Mother Baby/infants/peds)
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccine required within past 10 years (no exemptions accepted).
  • Seasonal flu vaccination required annually between October 31 and April 30; medical/religious exemptions allowed with mask requirement.
  • COVID-19 vaccine preferred but not required; documentation collected if available.
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months of start.

Documentation and Compliance

  • Passport-style photo (shoulders up, front-facing, plain background) required before start.
  • Completion of unit-specific skills checklist annually.
  • Proof of 2 professional references required.
  • Complete employment application/resume required.
  • Job description form specific to profession and unit must be completed.
  • Various facility-specific acknowledgements and forms must be completed within specified timeframes (e.g., Pyxis acknowledgment, traveler information grid).
  • TB questionnaire required if working longer than 1 year with the facility.
  • Vehicle registration form required before start.

Additional Notes

  • Candidates must be pre-closed on patient ratio acceptance before submission.
  • Overtime applies after 48 hours worked.
  • Facility enforces strict compliance with all credentialing, licensing, and background requirements.
  • Failure to meet any of the above requirements may result in contract cancellation or delay.
