Description
Job Title: Pharmacy Technician – Outpatient (Managed Care)
Location: Portland 97213
Schedule: Day Shift (08:00 AM – 05:00 PM), 5x8 hours
Duration: 26 Weeks with possible extension
Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Pharmacy Technician – Outpatient to support managed care pharmacy operations within a health plan environment. This role focuses on prior authorizations, pharmacy benefit administration, claims support, and member/provider communication. The ideal candidate will have strong analytical skills, advanced Excel proficiency, and experience working in pharmacy benefit management or managed care settings.
Key Responsibilities
- Process and coordinate pharmacy prior authorizations based on established clinical and benefit guidelines
- Handle inbound calls from members, providers, pharmacies, and internal departments
- Review pharmacy claims, eligibility, and benefit information for accuracy and completeness
- Route complex clinical cases to pharmacists or clinical reviewers as appropriate
- Perform medical coding support including ICD-10 and CPT coding as needed
- Maintain accurate documentation in pharmacy systems and databases
- Support pharmacy benefit administration, utilization management, and claims workflows
- Communicate with providers and pharmacies regarding medication and authorization issues
- Assist in audits, reporting, and data analysis for pharmacy operations
- Ensure compliance with HIPAA, federal, and state pharmacy regulations
- Provide excellent customer service and support resolution of pharmacy-related issues
Required Skills
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills (mandatory)
- Strong knowledge of pharmacy benefit management and managed care processes
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
- Ability to multitask and manage high-volume workloads
- Attention to detail and accuracy in data entry and documentation
- Proficiency with pharmacy or healthcare claims systems
- Understanding of medical terminology and drug utilization processes
Qualifications
- Active Pharmacy Technician license (state of Oregon or eligibility required)
- Minimum 1–2 years of pharmacy technician experience in a managed care or outpatient setting
- Experience with prior authorization, claims processing, or pharmacy benefits preferred
- Familiarity with ICD-10 and CPT coding strongly preferred
- Experience in a health plan, PBM, or insurance environment is highly desirable
- Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, regulated environment

- Strong organizational and documentation skills required
- Ability to follow strict compliance, privacy, and regulatory standards
- Must be comfortable working in a structured workflow environment with deadlines
