Pinon Health Center is an outpatient ambulatory health center that is notably broad in services for its size, featuring 15 exam rooms, 14 dental bays, 4 optometry exam rooms, a large physical therapy area, and a large pharmacy. The facility integrates native medicine coordination alongside conventional care – a reflection of the Navajo-centered care philosophy that guides the clinic.

Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM (Thursday afternoons 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM); 40 hours per week
Referral hospital: Chinle Comprehensive Health Care Facility (CCHCF) – 60-bed IHS hospital approximately 40 miles northwest; all inpatient, emergency, OB, and surgical cases are transferred here
Apply immediately – credentialing takes 6 to 8 weeks. Candidates must be ready to begin the onboarding process upon offer acceptance.

RESPONSIBILITIES
- Deliver comprehensive nursing care across the full patient age spectrum (neonate through geriatric) in outpatient, women's health, pediatric, and/or urgent care clinic settings
- Triage patients and implement evidence-based interventions, including in life-threatening situations
- Administer medications, IV fluids, blood products, and respiratory treatments per provider orders

- Document 100% of care in IHS electronic health record systems per Joint Commission, CMS, and IHS standards

- Support chronic disease management (high rates of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and behavioral health needs in this population)
- Rotate into other duty sections as patient care demands require
- Conduct inter-facility transports between Pinon Health Center and Chinle CCHCF (~40 miles NW) as assigned
- Approach all patient care with cultural humility and respect for traditional Navajo healing practices; native medicine coordination is an active part of care delivery at Pinon

HOUSING & SETTING
IHS staff housing is available on-site at Pinon Health Center and is essential for this placement. There is no commercial lodging within approximately 30 miles of the clinic. The nearest hotel is the Holiday Inn Canyon de Chelly in Chinle (~40 miles northwest). Confirm housing availability and assignment directly with facility HR prior to offer acceptance.
Pinon sits atop the Black Mesa plateau at approximately 6,336 feet elevation – surrounded by pinon-juniper woodland, red canyon country, and sweeping plateau views. It is one of the most geographically isolated communities in the lower 48 states and one of the most visually stunning environments of any IHS placement.
Nearest services and distances from Pinon:
- Chinle, AZ (CCHCF hospital, Canyon de Chelly NM, basic grocery, gas): ~40 miles NW / ~50 min
- Hopi Cultural Center & Motel (Second Mesa): ~45 miles W / ~55 min
- Holbrook, AZ (Walmart, full grocery, hotels, I-40): ~70 miles S / ~1 hr 20 min

4WD or AWD vehicle strongly recommended – Navajo Route 4 and connecting roads can be unpaved, muddy in monsoon season (July–September), and icy in winter.
Climate: Semi-arid high desert – 0°F to 90°F, low humidity, ~8.5 inches annual rainfall, four seasons including winter snow and dramatic summer monsoon thunderstorms. Extraordinary dark skies and stargazing year-round.

ABOUT THE COMMUNITY
Pinon (Navajo: Beʼekʼid Baa Ahoodzání – "lake that is surrounded") is among the most culturally traditional communities in the Navajo Nation. The majority of patients are traditional Navajo speakers for whom Diné bizaad is the language of home, family, and ceremony. Staff who come with genuine curiosity, humility, and openness to traditional Navajo culture consistently describe Pinon as one of the most profound healthcare experiences of their careers.
The IHS staff community at Pinon is close-knit and mission-driven – the facility is known for its book clubs, potlucks, fire pits, gardening, and genuine staff culture. Candidates who value community connection, cultural immersion, and outdoor adventure over urban amenities thrive here.
