Travel RN – ICU | (Rapid City, SD)
🏥 Unit Overview
- 39-bed mixed ICU
- MICU
- SICU
- CICU
- TICU
- Travelers generally will not float to CVICU unless they have prior CVICU experience.
- Heavy trauma and high-acuity patient population.
✅ Minimum Requirements
- 2+ years of recent ICU experience (excluding travel assignments) strongly preferred
- Candidates with 1.5+ years of ICU experience may be considered if they have significant additional RN experience (manager approval required).
- First-time travelers are NOT accepted.
- Must have completed at least one prior travel assignment.
- Must live 100+ miles from any Monument Health facility.
- Former permanent employees must wait 1 year before returning as travelers.
🩺 Patient Population
Cares for critically ill adult patients including:
- Medical ICU
- Surgical ICU
- Cardiac ICU
- Neuro ICU
- Trauma ICU
Common diagnoses include:
- ARDS
- Myocardial Infarction (MI)
- Stroke (CVA/TIA)
- COVID
- Post-cardiac catheterization
- Post-surgical patients
- Multi-system trauma
Cardiac ICU experience is preferred, especially:
- CABG (24–48 hours post-op)
- TAVR (24–48 hours post-op)
Fresh open-heart patients are generally assigned to permanent staff unless the traveler has extensive experience.
👥 Patient Ratios
- 1:1
- 1:2
- Occasionally 1:3 (based on patient acuity)
📋 Required Certifications
- BLS
- ACLS
- NIHSS
- TNCC (Required before arrival)
Candidates unwilling to obtain TNCC should not be submitted.
💉 Required Clinical Skills
Must be experienced with:
- Epic EMR (required)
- Ventilator management
- Hemodynamic monitoring
- Vasopressors
- Sedation
- Paralytics
- Telemetry
- Proning
- Strong critical thinking and assessment
Strongly Preferred:
- CRRT
- Impella
- IABP
🔄 Floating
ICU travelers may float to:
- Emergency Department (if qualified)
- Adult Med-Surg/Telemetry (1:4 ratio) when overstaffed
Traveler must be comfortable floating.
📅 Schedule
- 48 hours/week (mandatory and non-negotiable)
- Every other weekend preferred (not guaranteed)
- No on-call
📚 Orientation
Includes:
- Hospital orientation
- 8-hour department orientation
- 4-hour iLearn session
- Two 12-hour precepted shifts
- One additional independent 12-hour shift for 48-hour/week travelers
👩⚕️ Unit Support
- 1–2 CNAs plus mobility aide
- 2 ICU Charge Nurses
- 24/7 Respiratory Therapy
- 3 Intensivists (days)
- 2 Intensivists + APP (nights)
- Resource nurse (staffing dependent)
- Phlebotomy available
- ICU Charge RNs place midlines
