Interventional Radiology (IR) RN – Unit Overview
Facility Information
- Department: Interventional Radiology (IR)
- EMR: Allscripts
- Manager Preference: Must have Unit Manager experience
- Open to first-time travelers: Yes
Required Certifications
- BLS
- ACLS
- PALS (Required for all travelers; pediatric IR experience is not required.)
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 1 year IR nursing experience
- Strong IV insertion skills required
- Critical care background is preferred but not required
Staffing & Procedure Areas
- 1 IR procedure room
- May float between:
- IR
- CT/MRI
- Cath Lab (vascular procedures)
- Approximately 7 RNs staffed
Daily Volume
- 5–8 IR procedures/day
- Approximately 50 CT prep/IV starts daily

Biopsies
- Breast
- Thyroid (US-guided)
- CT-guided biopsies
Vascular
- Embolization (bleeds, fibroids, tumors)
- Pulmonary embolism thrombectomy (INARI/EKOS)
- DVT interventions
Drain Placement
- Abscess drains
- Pleural drains
- Paracentesis
- Joint collections
Pain Management
- Cervical, thoracic, lumbar injections
- Shoulder
- Hip
- Knee injections
Line Placement
- PICCs
- Ports
- Permcaths
- Tunneled catheters
- Chemo ports
- Fistulograms/interrogations
RN Responsibilities
- Pre-, intra-, and post-procedure care
- Comprehensive patient assessments
- Radiology flow sheet documentation
- Patient monitoring during moderate sedation
- IV starts
- CT/MRI preparation
- Physician communication regarding patient status and care plans
Schedule
- 12-hour shifts
- 7:00 AM–7:30 PM
- Some 7:00 PM starts
- One-hour lunch
- Two 15-minute breaks
- Flexible scheduling; block scheduling not guaranteed
Call Requirements
- No call
- Permanent night staff cover nights
- Permanent staff cover holidays
Floating
- No general floating
- May assist in Cath Lab only for IR-related vascular cases
- May work between IR and CT/MRI as needed
Team Structure
- Charge nurse coordinates workflow and assists clinically when needed
- CST works directly with physician
- IR technologists from Radiology department
- Two IR physicians available during the day; after 5 PM coverage is on call
Documentation
- Electronic documentation in Allscripts
- Some paper charting depending on procedure/modality
Orientation
- Approximately 3 shifts
- Additional orientation provided if needed based on competency assessment
Dress Code
- Royal blue scrubs
- Surgical/disposable scrubs when working in Cath Lab
