Position Overview
The Respiratory Care Practitioner performs routine and critical respiratory care procedures under the supervision of a Respiratory Care Supervisor and Medical Director. This role provides care across all patient populations — Neonatal, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult, and Geriatric — across inpatient units and the Emergency Department.
Key Responsibilities
- Evaluate patients for routine respiratory care therapy on inpatient units and in the Emergency Department
- Complete assessments on ventilated patients and all other patients receiving respiratory care services
- Obtain and analyze Arterial, Venous, and Capillary blood gases
- Prepare, test, and check respiratory therapy equipment for proper and safe operation
- Process, maintain, disassemble, wash, rinse, dry, and package respiratory equipment
- Report malfunctioning equipment to manager promptly
- Recommend timely interventions and need for further treatment or referral within patient respiratory care regimens
- Accurately chart on respiratory flow sheets, care plans, and charge accurately in EMR
- Record procedures, patient responses, and compliance with sleep therapy documentation requirements
- Consult with Respiratory Care Practitioner regarding adverse effects and equipment compliance
- Relay relevant patient information in writing to the physician
- Assist with stocking respiratory care supplies on inpatient units
- Function as a role model in Respiratory Care, demonstrating clinical judgment and technical competency
Required Skills
- Solid understanding of all aspects of respiratory care
- Patient assessment and clinical judgment
- EMR charting and care plan evaluation
- Blood gas analysis (Arterial, Venous, Capillary)
- Equipment preparation and maintenance
- Sleep therapy documentation
Education
- Required: Associate's Degree in Respiratory Therapy
Required Certifications & Licensure
- BLS (American Heart Association)
- Illinois RCP License
- NBRC Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT)
