Description
- Perform routine and complex laboratory testing in departments such as:
- Clinical Chemistry
- Hematology
- Coagulation
- Microbiology
- Immunology/Serology
- Blood Bank (Immunohematology)
- Urinalysis
- Molecular Diagnostics (where applicable).
- Conduct all phases of laboratory testing:
- Pre-analytical (specimen collection, identification, processing)
- Analytical (performing tests)
- Post-analytical (verification, interpretation, and reporting of results).
- Evaluate specimens for acceptability and troubleshoot specimen-related issues before testing.
- Operate, calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory analyzers and instrumentation to ensure optimal performance.
- Perform and document quality control (QC), quality assurance (QA), proficiency testing, and corrective actions in accordance with laboratory policies and regulatory standards.
- Recognize abnormal or critical test results, investigate discrepancies, and promptly communicate critical values to the appropriate healthcare providers.
- Follow all applicable regulatory and accreditation requirements, including:
- Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA)
- College of American Pathologists (CAP)
- Veterans Health Administration (VHA) policies
- Laboratory safety and infection control standards.
- Maintain accurate laboratory documentation, instrument maintenance logs, and patient testing records.
- Assist with validation of new methods, implementation of new instruments, and development or revision of standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Train, mentor, and provide technical guidance to laboratory staff, students, and new employees as assigned.
- Collaborate with pathologists, physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to support timely diagnosis and optimal patient care for Veterans.
- Participate in laboratory quality improvement initiatives, competency assessments, and continuous process improvement activities.
