About Facility:
o Charlotte, NC
o 874 licensed beds
o Level 1 Trauma Designation
o Level 1 Pediatric Trauma attached
o Teaching Hospital
o Chest Pain Center
o Stroke Center
o Magnet Designation
● Unit Information:
o Beds: 29
▪ Census? Average patients/day? 29
o Minimum Years of Experience required? 2 years in Adult ICU
o Will you accept a first-time traveler? Must have completed at least (1) 13-week assignment
● Patient Types/Common Diagnoses:
o Neuro ICU to include but not limited to ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes, subarachnoid hemorrhage, traumatic brain injuries, seizures/status epilepticus, spinal cord injuries, EVD drains/ICP monitoring, post op Crani's (straight from OR), IR (straight from procedure), TNK patients – 50% of administrations will be done on the unit vs. ED
o Some off-service Trauma or Medical ICU patients
● Patient Ratios:
o RN: 1:2; sometimes will be tripled, if patients have downgrade orders
o CNA – not consistently staffed on this unit
● Required Certifications:
o BLS, ACLS, NIHSS
● Skills required:
o Epic experience is required
o Management of external ventricular drains (EVD), intracranial pressure monitoring, Ventilator Management, Management to vasoactive drips, tracheostomy care, central line maintenance, post monitor TNK and IR
o CRRT is sometimes seen, and traveler could take this if competent
● Support within the Department:
o Supervisor
o Stroke Response Nurse
o Clinical Educator
o Charge nurse: free floating
o Phlebotomy: Nurse Draw
o RT 24/7: Yes
o Intensivist, 24/7: Yes, NP or PA is in-house for any emergency as part of the Neurocritical Care Team
o Pharmacist – shared pharmacy team after 2300
o PT/OT/ST – 7 days a week
o Case Management/Social Work
● Technology/Equipment:
o EMR: Epic - Required
o IV Pump: Alaris
o Med dispensing: Omnicell
o Monitors: Philips
o Unit specific equipment: Artic Sun (Targeted Temperature Management) - occasionally, Vigilance Monitor, CRRT, ICP Monitoring/EVD drains
● Floating: If yes, where?
o Adult Critical care units, as needed (MICU, STICU, Dixon Heart, CTICU)
o PCU 1:3 max ratio
● Orientation (facility and unit):
o NEO
o 2 days departmental – dependent on skillset and comfort level
● Scheduling:
o Weekend rotation: every other (Fri/Sat/Sun)
o On call? If so, what is that schedule? No call
o Holiday Expectations: Travelers will work 75% of holidays
o RTO: Manager approval
o Shift times: 1845 - 0715
o Schedule cycle: every 6 weeks
