Position Title: Clinical Psychiatric Registered Nurse (RN)
Department: Behavioral Health Services
Reports To: Behavioral Health Director/Clinical Manager
Employment Type: Full-Time
Location: Tribal Community Health Center/Clinic

 

Position Summary

The Clinical Psychiatric RN provides comprehensive behavioral health and psychiatric nursing services to Native American and Alaska Native individuals, families, and communities. This position supports the delivery of culturally responsive, trauma-informed mental health care in collaboration with behavioral health providers, primary care teams, Tribal leadership, and community partners.

The Clinical Psychiatric RN plays a vital role in promoting mental wellness, managing psychiatric conditions, supporting crisis intervention efforts, and improving access to quality behavioral healthcare while respecting Tribal traditions, values, and cultural practices.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical Care

  • Conduct psychiatric nursing assessments and monitor patients with mental health and substance use disorders.
  • Assist with psychiatric evaluations and treatment planning in collaboration with psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, physicians, counselors, and social workers.
  • Administer and monitor psychiatric medications, including injections and other prescribed treatments.
  • Assess and document medication effectiveness, side effects, and patient adherence.
  • Provide patient and family education regarding diagnoses, medications, treatment plans, and wellness strategies.
  • Monitor patients for safety risks, including suicidal ideation, self-harm, substance use, and psychiatric emergencies.

Care Coordination

  • Coordinate behavioral health services with primary care providers and community resources.
  • Facilitate referrals to specialty mental health, substance use treatment, and social services programs.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary care team meetings and case reviews.
  • Assist patients in navigating healthcare systems and support services.

Crisis Intervention

  • Respond to behavioral health crises and psychiatric emergencies.
  • Conduct risk assessments and assist in developing safety plans.
  • Coordinate emergency interventions and follow-up care as needed.

Community Engagement

  • Participate in community outreach, wellness initiatives, and health education events.
  • Support culturally grounded approaches to healing and recovery.
  • Foster positive relationships with Tribal members, Elders, families, and community stakeholders.

Documentation and Compliance

  • Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation in electronic health records.
  • Ensure compliance with Tribal, federal, state, and organizational regulations and standards.
  • Protect patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and applicable Tribal privacy requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing.
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of nursing experience.
  • Experience in behavioral health, psychiatric nursing, community health, or related clinical settings.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Knowledge of psychiatric medications, mental health disorders, and crisis intervention techniques.
  • Strong communication, documentation, and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN).
  • Certification in Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing (PMH-RN or equivalent).
  • Experience working in Tribal, Indigenous, rural, underserved, or multicultural healthcare settings.
  • Familiarity with Indian Health Service (IHS) programs and Tribal healthcare systems.
  • Training in trauma-informed care, suicide prevention, and substance use disorder treatment.
  • Experience with electronic health record systems.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Understanding of behavioral health disorders across the lifespan.
  • Commitment to culturally responsive and patient-centered care.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations and interdisciplinary teams.
  • Knowledge of trauma, historical trauma, and social determinants of health impacting Tribal communities.
  • Strong assessment, critical thinking, and crisis management skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries.

Working Conditions

  • Clinical and community-based work environments.
  • May require travel to Tribal community sites, schools, homes, or outreach events.
  • Participation in after-hours on-call or crisis response coverage may be required.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds and perform routine nursing duties.
