Description

Job Description

The Labor & Delivery Registered Nurse provides comprehensive nursing care to mothers and newborns throughout labor, delivery, recovery, and postpartum in a family-centered LDRP environment. The RN independently manages laboring patients, assists with vaginal and cesarean deliveries, provides immediate newborn care, performs postpartum couplet care, and collaborates with obstetricians, neonatal providers, anesthesia, and interdisciplinary teams to ensure safe maternal and neonatal outcomes.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Assess, monitor, and care for patients throughout labor, delivery, recovery, and postpartum.
  • Perform continuous maternal and fetal assessments using electronic fetal monitoring (EFM).
  • Provide one-to-one care for laboring patients following AWHONN staffing standards.
  • Attend vaginal deliveries and provide immediate newborn stabilization and the first hour of newborn care.
  • Circulate and recover patients undergoing Cesarean sections.
  • Care for antepartum, postpartum, and couplet mother-baby patients.
  • Perform newborn assessments, medications, feeding support, and patient education.
  • Triage obstetric patients presenting to the unit.
  • Administer and titrate medications including:
    • Pitocin
    • Magnesium Sulfate
    • Insulin infusions (as needed)
  • Monitor and manage high-risk obstetric conditions such as:
    • Hypertensive disorders
    • Magnesium therapy
    • Gestational diabetes
    • VBAC/TOLAC patients
  • Recognize and respond to maternal or fetal emergencies.
  • Collaborate with OB hospitalists, neonatal nurse practitioners, anesthesia, respiratory therapy, and surgical staff.
  • Document patient care accurately in Epic.
  • Float to Labor & Delivery, Antepartum, or Postpartum units at affiliated St. Luke's Treasure Valley facilities when needed.
  • Educate patients and families on labor, delivery, newborn care, breastfeeding, postpartum recovery, and discharge planning.
  • Maintain infection prevention and patient safety standards.
Required Experience Minimum 1 year of Labor & Delivery experience accepted for this position (facility will accept candidates with one year). Mother-Baby/Postpartum experience required. Experience with: Labor management Newborn care OB triage Cesarean section circulating and recovery Magnesium therapy Pitocin administration Electronic fetal monitoring
