Description

Nurse Manager – Obstetrics (Labor & Delivery, Postpartum & Special Care Nursery)

Schedule:

  • Monday–Friday
  • 5x8-hour shifts
  • 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM
  • Every other weekend and holiday on-call coverage for the entire OB department, including Labor & Delivery

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Nurse Manager – Obstetrics to provide clinical and operational leadership for the Obstetrics department. This role is responsible for overseeing daily operations, staffing, quality initiatives, staff development, and patient care while supporting Labor & Delivery, Postpartum, and the Special Care Nursery. The ideal candidate is a collaborative leader with strong obstetrical nursing experience and previous management experience.

 

Responsibilities

  • Ensure appropriate staffing levels through flexibility and adaptability.
  • Assign personnel based on patient care needs and staff competencies.
  • Serve as Charge Nurse when working clinically.
  • Lead daily shift huddles and review operational plans of care.
  • Manage department schedules and staff timecards.
  • Oversee schedules for OB Nursing, Patient Care Technicians (PCTs), Labor & Delivery Scrub Technicians, and Unit Coordinators.
  • Collaborate with nursing leadership and educators to develop, update, and implement department policies and procedures.
  • Evaluate staff performance and conduct annual performance reviews.
  • Participate in interviewing and hiring new team members.
  • Provide coaching, conflict resolution, and performance management.
  • Promote professional development and staff engagement.
  • Support quality improvement, patient satisfaction, and nursing practice initiatives.
  • Coordinate ongoing staff education, including new policies, regulatory requirements, equipment, and clinical software.
  • Maintain effective communication across all levels of the department.
  • Participate in quality assurance activities, audits, and action plans.
  • Coordinate and support staff orientation and competency validation.
  • Assist with department supply and equipment management.
  • Provide direct patient care as needed.
  • Serve as the OB Day Shift Charge RN on designated duty days while partnering with clinical resource nurses to support weekend and holiday operations.
  • Perform all RN duties within Labor & Delivery, Postpartum, and the Special Care Nursery.
  • Participate in hospital committees and other assigned responsibilities.
  • Maintain patient rights, privacy, dignity, and respect.

Qualifications

Required

  • Previous nurse manager or leadership experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of obstetrical nursing experience with demonstrated leadership abilities.
  • Current Massachusetts Registered Nurse (RN) license.
  • BLS certification.
  • ACLS certification.
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification.
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional growth and evidence-based patient care.

Preferred

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN).
  • Previous supervisory experience.
  • Inpatient Obstetrics Certification.
  • Experience with Kronos is a huge plus.
