Travel RN – Stepdown / PCU
📍 Location: Not specified
🏥 Unit: Stepdown / PCU
🛏️ Beds: 30
⏰ Weekly Hours: 36 hours/week
🕐 Shift: Days | 7:00 AM–7:00 PM or 6:45 AM–7:15 PM
📅 Weekend: Every other weekend
🎉 Holiday: May be required to participate in holiday rotation
📞 Call: None
👕 Scrubs: Navy Blue
Unit & Patient Population
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4–6, depending on acuity
- Common patient types include:
- Cardiac patients
- Post-pneumonia
- Post-cath lab
- Seizures
- ETOH/CIWA protocols
- Pacemaker patients
- Monitor tech available 24/7
- RNs must independently read and interpret telemetry
- RNs are expected to print strips, perform measurements, and identify rhythms
- RT available 24/7 and assigned to the unit
- RT manages BiPAP, Airvo, trachs, and respiratory treatments; RNs should be able to troubleshoot equipment appropriately
Required Qualifications
- 2+ years of Stepdown/PCU experience required
- Strong cardiac monitoring experience
- Comfortable managing and titrating cardiac drips
- BLS required
- ACLS required
- Active RN license

Staffing & Scheduling
- Day-shift charge nurse generally does not take an assignment unless needed
- Night-shift charge nurse may take a lighter assignment
- Patient care techs assist with ADLs, vitals, bathing, toileting, feeding, repositioning, call lights, and blood sugars
- Travelers may float to any inpatient unit
- Travelers are first to float
- Self-scheduling is allowed, but schedules are not finalized until the schedule is completed
- Orientation: 2 days general orientation + 1 day with a preceptor

Cons
Lack benefits and perks other companies offer. Was incorrectly paid more than once. The assignment was the worst I’ve experienced from management down to housekeeping. They nitpick travelers on every level and give them double the respiratory therapist to patient ratio with every assignment spread over multiple floors and areas on every side of the facility. Staff makes no attempt at teamwork. Bottom line: Malone is ok🥴 but has MUCH room to improve. Elizabethtown, KY is awful and puts their patients and your license at risk every shift. Don’t do it!
