RN – Cath Lab

 

Shift: 4 × 10-hour day shifts
Weekends: Yes
On-Call: Shared on-call responsibilities for nights, weekends, and holidays; must be able to respond within 30 minutes when called.

Job Summary

The Registered Nurse (RN) – Cath Lab provides specialized nursing care to patients undergoing diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterization procedures. The RN works collaboratively with cardiologists and the multidisciplinary team to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care before, during, and after procedures.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provides comprehensive nursing care to patients undergoing cardiac catheterization and interventional procedures.
  • Performs patient assessments, develops and implements nursing care plans, and evaluates patient responses to treatment.
  • Functions as a Cath Lab-trained circulating nurse during procedures, including PCI and STEMI cases.
  • Assists with the preparation, monitoring, and management of patients during emergent and scheduled cardiac procedures.
  • Demonstrates competency in the use and management of advanced cardiac support equipment, including Impella and intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP).
  • Administers medications, IV therapies, and other treatments according to physician orders and organizational policies.
  • Monitors patients for changes in cardiac and hemodynamic status and responds appropriately to clinical emergencies.
  • Maintains knowledge of sterile technique, procedural safety, and Cath Lab protocols.
  • Collaborates with physicians, technologists, anesthesia personnel, and other healthcare professionals to support safe patient care.
  • Documents assessments, interventions, medications, procedures, and patient responses accurately and timely.
  • Provides patient and family education regarding procedures, treatments, recovery, and discharge instructions.
  • Participates in emergency response and STEMI activation processes as required.
  • Maintains competency in all required Cath Lab and basic nursing skills.
  • Participates in shared on-call coverage for nights, weekends, and holidays and responds within the required 30-minute response time.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Minimum 1 year of Registered Nurse experience required.
  • Previous Cath Lab nursing experience/training required.
  • Demonstrated competency in circulating PCI and STEMI procedures.
  • Experience with Impella and IABP management preferred/required based on facility competency standards.
  • Strong cardiac assessment, critical-thinking, and clinical decision-making skills.
  • Proficiency in medication administration and other fundamental nursing skills.
  • Ability to respond quickly and effectively to emergent cardiac situations.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with the multidisciplinary Cath Lab team.
  • Ability to participate in on-call coverage and meet the required 30-minute response time.

Education

  • Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN/ASN) from an accredited nursing program required.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.

Required License

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice.
  • Single-state or Compact RN license accepted, as applicable.

Required Certifications

  • BLS – American Heart Association (AHA) – Required
  • ACLS – American Heart Association (AHA) – Required

Work Schedule

  • 4 × 10-hour day shifts
  • Weekend rotation required
  • Shared on-call rotation covering nights, weekends, and holidays
  • 30-minute response time required when on call.
