Registered Nurse – Medical/Surgical (Night Shift)

Location: Akron, Ohio
Facility: Akron Campus
Department: H5 Medical/Surgical
Contract Dates: September 20, 2026 – November 28, 2026
Shift: 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM

Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Registered Nurse (RN) – Medical/Surgical for a fast-paced inpatient unit. The ideal candidate will have strong recent Med/Surg experience, excellent clinical judgment, and the ability to adapt to changing patient assignments throughout the shift.

This position requires a compassionate and confident RN who can provide high-quality nursing care to adolescent through geriatric patients with a wide range of medical and surgical conditions.
 

Unit Overview

This is a 36-bed Medical/Surgical unit providing 24/7 nursing care to hospitalized patients requiring medical and surgical interventions. The unit cares for a diverse patient population with conditions and procedures including:

  • General and abdominal surgeries
  • Colorectal surgery
  • Mastectomy and thyroidectomy
  • Urology and Women's Health
  • Gynecology and Uro-Gynecology
  • Gynecologic Oncology
  • Plastic surgery and ENT procedures
  • Trauma and cardiothoracic patients
  • Orthopedic patients
  • Spinal and neuro overflow patients
  • Obstetrical complications, including preeclampsia and hyperemesis
  • Pregnant patients experiencing substance withdrawal
  • Diabetic pregnancies and other high-risk obstetrical conditions

Typical Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:5–6

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive nursing care to assigned Medical/Surgical patients.
  • Perform patient assessments, develop care plans, and monitor patient conditions.
  • Administer medications and treatments safely and accurately.
  • Collaborate with physicians and the interdisciplinary healthcare team.
  • Monitor patients for changes in condition and respond appropriately to emergencies.
  • Provide patient and family education regarding diagnoses, treatments, medications, and discharge instructions.
  • Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation.
  • Float to other units as required based on patient care needs.
  • Follow all facility policies, clinical standards, and infection prevention protocols.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced environment with changing patient assignments.

Required Qualifications

  • Active and unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license.
  • Minimum 2+ years of recent Medical/Surgical nursing experience.
  • Recent Epic experience within the last year must be clearly listed on the resume.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • Graduation from an accredited nursing program recognized by ACEN or CCNE.
  • Strong clinical assessment, critical thinking, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be willing to float as required.
  • Must wear solid black scrubs.

Scheduling & RTO Requirements

  • RTO must be submitted at the time of submission.
  • Maximum of 7 days of RTO will be accepted.
  • Candidates requesting more than 7 days of RTO will not be considered.
  • RTO will not be accommodated during the first two weeks of the assignment.
  • Block scheduling is not available.
  • Candidates requesting or preferring a block schedule may be rejected.

Selected candidates must complete required facility assessments, competencies, and credentialing requirements, which may include:

  • Medical/Surgical and Specialty Exams
  • Pharmacology Exam
  • EKG and Telemetry Exams
  • Nursing Skills Checklist
  • Core Competencies and Competency Exams
  • License verification
  • Background and exclusion checks
  • Drug screening
  • Health screening and fit testing
  • TB, immunization, and vaccination documentation
  • Education verification
  • Facility-specific submission and work order documentation

Interview Required

Qualified candidates should have strong recent Med/Surg experience, current Epic experience, and the flexibility to succeed in a high-acuity, fast-paced nursing environment.
