Job Title: Histotechnologist
Duration: 13+ Weeks + High possibility of extension
Location: Houston, TX 77030
Schedule: Day Shift, Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–4:30 PM

 

Job Summary
The Histotechnician/Histotechnologist performs routine histology procedures, specimen processing, tissue embedding, microtomy, staining, and slide preparation for pathologic examination. The position requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to quality and turnaround times. Experience with special stains, frozen sections, and non-gynecologic cytology processing is preferred.

 

Key Responsibilities:
Validate specimen identification, specimen type, and sample size.
Prioritize and process specimens according to established handling protocols and turnaround-time requirements.
Process tissue specimens using automated tissue processors and select the appropriate processing solutions and programs for each specimen type.
Embed tissue specimens and perform microtomy at a minimum rate of 30 blocks per hour while maintaining excellent quality.
Cut tissue sections to the appropriate thickness and prepare the correct number of sections and slides for each specimen or block type.
Perform routine histologic staining procedures, including AFB, MSN, Gram, and Oro stains, according to established laboratory procedures.
Prioritize and coordinate multiple staining procedures to support timely and productive specimen processing.
Coverslip slides at a minimum rate of 3 slides per minute.
Properly label, organize, and distribute slides for pathologist interpretation.
Assist with liver biopsies and fine needle aspirations.
Retrieve and process fresh specimens from the main laboratory, cryostat laboratory, NGI suite, CT suite, and Electron Microscopy.
Perform technical, specimen-number, and result inquiries.
Troubleshoot specimen-processing and technical problems and escalate issues when appropriate.
Maintain high-quality embedding, cutting, staining, and slide preparation standards.
Follow laboratory safety, quality-control, infection-control, and regulatory requirements.
Maintain accurate documentation and comply with departmental policies and procedures.
Collaborate effectively with pathologists, laboratory staff, and other healthcare professionals.

 

Required Experience:
Minimum 2 years of paid Histology experience required.
Hospital or reference laboratory experience preferred.
Strong experience with routine histology, tissue embedding, microtomy, and slide preparation.
Excellent embedding and cutting skills with an emphasis on quality over speed.
Experience with special stains, frozen sections, and non-gynecologic cytology processing preferred.

 

Required Certifications:
HT(ASCP) – Histotechnician, OR
HTL(ASCP) – Histotechnologist

Required Education
Associate's Degree in Science or Histology required.
