MICU (Medical Intensive Unit Care) 1 year required

 

MICU — RN Unit Overview
Department: MICU
Beds: 26
Typical staffing: ~14 RNs per shift
RN-to-patient ratio: 1:1–2; may be 1:3 when short-staffed
Required certifications: BLS, ACLS
Preferred certification: CCRN
MICU experience: Required
Trauma: No trauma patients
Patient Population / Common Diagnoses

Common diagnoses include:

Cardiac arrest
Sepsis
Neurosurgical patients
DKA
Induced hypothermia
GI bleeds
Angioedema
Other critical medical conditions
Drips & Critical Care Skills

RNs must be able to independently titrate all drips, including:

Pressors
Sedation
Paralytics
Antiarrhythmics
Insulin

Travelers are generally not assigned equipment responsibilities.

Staffing & Support
Charge RN: No patient assignment; responds to codes and RRTs
PCTs: 3 on days, 2 on nights
Providers: Fellows/residents in-house 24/7; attendings are not on-site 24/7
RT: 2 RTs in the ICU 24/7
RT manages respiratory equipment; nurses administer breathing treatments
Respiratory equipment: CPAP, BiPAP, ventilators, trachs
Monitoring
Centralized telemetry monitoring at the nurses' station
No dedicated telemetry techs
RNs must independently read and interpret telemetry strips
Schedule
Shifts: 7:00 AM–7:30 PM / 7:00 PM–7:30 AM
Travelers provide availability, and the hospital will try to accommodate requests
Travelers are expected to remain flexible and help fill permanent-staffing gaps
Block scheduling is not guaranteed
Excessive call-ins are taken seriously and may result in termination
Weekends & Holidays
Weekend requirement: At least 2 weekends per 4-week schedule
Weekend means both Saturday and Sunday
Applies to both day and night shifts
Travelers may be included in the holiday rotation
Call / Floating
Call/standby: None
Floating: Travelers float first
Float destination is stepdown only, with ratios of approximately 1:3–4
Other Details
Scrub color: Royal Blue
Orientation: 2 days classroom + 1 day with a preceptor

Bottom line: This is a fairly high-acuity MICU requiring solid ICU experience and strong independent titration skills. The biggest traveler considerations are the 1:3 possibility when short-staffed, mandatory weekend commitment, floating first, flexibility with scheduling, and no guaranteed block scheduling.
