Typical Ratio: 1:2
EMR: Meditech
Experience: 2+ years of cardiac critical care experience required
Certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS
Weekends: 4 weekend shifts per 4-week schedule

Unit Overview

This is a high-acuity Pediatric Cardiac ICU caring for congenital cardiac patients, including complex post-operative and medically fragile pediatric patients.

The CVIPCU works closely with the adjoining PICU, providing additional staffing resources and support.

Required Experience

Candidates must have:

  • 2+ years of cardiac critical care experience
  • Strong pediatric cardiac ICU skills
  • Experience managing inotropic and vasopressor infusions
  • Post-op cardiac patient care
  • Chest tube management
  • Care of post-sternotomy / open chest patients
  • Moderate sedation experience

Preferred Experience

Candidates with the following will be considered especially strong:

  • ECMO bedside experience
  • CRRT
  • Peritoneal dialysis

Equipment

  • Philips monitors
  • Medfusion pumps
  • Baxter pumps
  • CentriMag
  • PrisMax
  • Arctic Sun

Staffing

Typical staffing includes:

  • 1 Charge RN
  • RNs staffed according to census and acuity
  • Approximate 1:2 critical care ratio
  • Unit partners with PICU staff for additional support

Patient Care

Typical cases and procedures include:

  • Congenital heart disease
  • Post-operative cardiac surgery
  • Continuous inotropic infusions
  • Vasopressor management
  • IV fluid management
  • Chest tubes
  • Open chest / post-sternotomy care
  • Moderate sedation
  • ECMO-level patients
  • Renal replacement therapy

Unit Highlights

This unit serves as an ECMO center for the hospital, caring for both cardiac patients and medically complex neonates. The RN team averages approximately 10 years of nursing experience, with a strong focus on evidence-based practice, patient safety, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Recruiter Notes

This is a true pediatric cardiac critical care position, not a general PICU role. The strongest candidate will have recent CVICU/CICU experience with congenital heart patients, post-op cardiac surgery, vasoactive drip management, and ideally ECMO and CRRT exposure.

Hard-stop prescreen:
“Do you have at least 2 years of recent pediatric cardiac critical care experience, including post-op congenital heart patients and titration of inotropes/vasopressors?”
