Description

Location: Bismarck, North Dakota
Specialty: L&D RN
Unit: L&D / Postpartum / GYN
Contract: 13 weeks
Dates: 9/14/26 – 12/14/26
Positions: 3
Guaranteed: 36 hours/week
Shift: 3×12 Nights
Weekends/Holidays: Rotating
Type: Travel
Bill Rate: $107/hr

🕐 Schedule

Primary schedule:

3×12-hour nights

But there's an important catch:

Traveler must be willing to work some days.

So I would not sell this as guaranteed straight nights.

They specifically say:

  • 3×12 nights
  • Rotating weekends
  • Rotating holidays
  • Some day shifts
  • Floating/helping hands as needed

If your nurse absolutely refuses days, I'd be cautious submitting them.

🚨 HARD-STOP / IMPORTANT Requirements

1. 🔴 3 Years Experience

They specifically require:

3 years of L&D experience.

And they want experience in:

  • L&D
  • Postpartum / Mother-Baby
  • GYN care

This is much more experienced than the Utah job's 1-year requirement.

2. 🔴 BLS + ACLS + NRP

Required:

  • BLS/CPR
  • ACLS
  • NRP

STABLE

Preferred, but NOT required.

That's nice because a candidate without STABLE can still qualify.

3. 🟠 Must Float to Nursery/NICU

The candidate must be willing to float/help in:

  • Newborn Nursery
  • NICU

The description specifically calls this "Helping Hands."

So I wouldn't necessarily interpret this as:

"You're taking a full NICU assignment."

It's more of a support/assist role, but the traveler needs to be comfortable doing it.

🏥 Unit

The unit has approximately:

19 beds/rooms

The nurse works across several areas:

L&D → Mother/Baby → GYN

This is a pretty broad OB assignment.

👶 Patient Population

They care for:

L&D

  • Normal deliveries
  • High-risk patients
  • Laboring patients
  • Delivery/recovery

Postpartum

  • Mom/baby couplets
  • Postpartum care
  • Newborn care

GYN

  • GYN surgical patients
  • Post-op care

So this is not a pure L&D floor.

A traveler needs to be comfortable moving between different patient populations.

👩‍⚕️ Ratios

This is actually one of the better parts of the job.

L&D

1:1 or 1:2

Mother/Baby

1:3 couplets

GYN

4 patients

Mixed assignment

If caring for a combination of mom/babies + GYN:

1:5–6

That's reasonable for a combined OB/GYN unit.

🫀 Fetal Monitoring

Required skill:

Fetal monitoring

They use:

  • Fetal monitors
  • OBIX documentation
  • Centralized L&D monitoring

So I'd want a candidate who is comfortable interpreting fetal heart rate strips independently.

🖥️ EMR

There's actually a split system:

L&D

OBIX

GYN

Epic

So don't just ask:

"Do you have Epic?"

I'd specifically ask about OBIX/L&D fetal monitoring documentation as well.

🧑‍⚕️ Job Duties

The nurse will handle:

  • L&D patient care
  • High-risk labor
  • Delivery care
  • Postpartum mom/baby
  • GYN post-op patients
  • Fetal monitoring
  • Newborn support
  • Nursery/NICU helping hands

This is a well-rounded OB RN position.

🩺 Trauma / Facility

Acute care

The listing doesn't provide a trauma level.

I wouldn't advertise this as a Trauma I/II job unless you verify that separately.

💰 Pay

Bill Rate: $107/hr

OT: $117/hr

Charge: $110/hr

Holiday: $117/hr

Again, these are bill rates, not the traveler's pay.

Guaranteed:

36 hours/week

That's the number I'd focus on when comparing packages.

🏠 Local Traveler Rule

This is important:

No local travelers within 80 miles.

If the candidate has a permanent address within 80 miles of Bismarck, they're not eligible as a local traveler.

For a true traveler coming from outside the area, that's not an issue.

⚠️ Sanford Previous Employee Rule

This is a submission requirement.

You MUST note if the candidate has ever worked for Sanford Health.

If they previously worked for Sanford:

Their end date must be at least 6 months before submission.

So I'd ask this during your initial screening:

"Have you ever worked for Sanford Health in any capacity?"

👕 Scrubs

Navy blue scrubs

There is a slight distinction:

  • GYN / Mother-Baby → Navy blue
  • L&D → Hospital-provided scrubs are available

Pretty easy compliance item.

📚 Orientation

The posting says:

36 hours of orientation for travelers.

Top-level listing says orientation 8 hours, but the detailed unit information specifically says 36 hours, so I'd use 36 hours as the working assumption and verify with Medical Solutions if you're calculating pay.

❌ Cancellation

Client can cancel:

Up to 12 hours per 13-week assignment.

That's only one 12-hour shift, which is considerably better than the French Hospital and Utah jobs we just looked at.

🎯 Ideal Candidate

I'd target an RN with:

L&D / Mother-Baby / GYN

  • 3+ years L&D
  • Recent L&D experience
  • Postpartum/Mother-Baby
  • GYN/post-op experience
  • High-risk delivery experience
  • Fetal monitoring
  • BLS
  • ACLS
  • NRP
  • STABLE preferred
  • Epic experience
  • OBIX experience is a plus
  • Comfortable with newborn nursery/NICU support
  • Comfortable working some days
  • Comfortable EOW/rotating weekends
  • Comfortable holidays
  • Willing to float
  • No Sanford employment within previous 6 months

1. 36 Guaranteed Hours

Good guaranteed weekly hours.

2. Excellent L&D Ratios

1:1–1:2 in L&D is a strong selling point.

3. Broad OB Experience

L&D + Mother/Baby + GYN.

4. Only 1 Shift Cancellation

The cancellation policy is relatively favorable.

5. STABLE Isn't Required

Only preferred.

6. Strong Experience Builder

For an experienced traveler wanting a broad OB assignment, this gives them exposure to L&D, postpartum, newborns and GYN surgical patients.

A Recruiter Who Works For You My name is Sean, and I’m a U.S.-based travel nurse recruiter here in Denver, Colorado. I’ve been recruiting nurses for 10+ years, and one thing I’ve always believed in is that communication, transparency, and honesty are what make a great recruiter-nurse relationship. One thing I want nurses to know about Vivian: when you apply to jobs, you may be giving recruiters consent to submit you—even if you never actually speak with them. That’s not how I work. I will never submit one of my nurses without written or verbal consent. If you apply to one of my jobs, I want to make sure you know: • Where you are being submitted • The pay breakdown • The complete job details • What the facility is like, when I have previous experience or knowledge of it • What to expect during the interview process My job isn’t just to submit you and hope for the best. My job is to work for you, make sure you’re prepared, and help you land the right assignment. I’ll always give you the good, the bad, and the ugly about a job when I know it. I’d rather be upfront with you than tell you what you want to hear just to get a submission. If you’re looking for a recruiter who values communication, transparency, honesty, and actually picking up the phone, I’d love the opportunity to work with you. Feel free to apply to any of my jobs and send me a message. If you have questions about a position or don’t have a complete profile yet, just reach out. I’m happy to help. Also, if you have specific states or areas you’re targeting, let me know. I recruit nationwide and can help you find opportunities that fit what you’re looking for. 10+ years recruiting. One goal: Get my nurses the right job. 🇺🇸🩺
