Description

Position Summary

The Adaptive Physical Education Teacher provides specialized physical education instruction for students with physical, cognitive, or developmental challenges. The role focuses on developing motor skills, physical fitness, confidence, and participation through individualized and inclusive activities.
 

Responsibilities

  • Assess students’ physical education needs, abilities, and motor development.
  • Develop IEPs and measurable goals related to motor skills, coordination, strength, and endurance.
  • Design and implement age-appropriate adaptive physical education activities.
  • Provide individualized and group instruction based on student needs.
  • Use specialized equipment, technology, and adaptive teaching strategies.
  • Monitor student progress and adjust instruction as needed.
  • Collaborate with special education teachers, therapists, paraprofessionals, general education staff, and families.
  • Participate in IEP meetings and provide input regarding physical education goals.
  • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress.
  • Maintain a safe, positive, and inclusive learning environment.
  • Implement appropriate behavior management strategies.
  • Maintain accurate records of assessments, student progress, and IEP goals.
  • Follow district, state, and federal special education requirements.
  • Participate in professional development and staff training.
  • May supervise paraprofessionals, PT aides, or volunteers as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, Special Education, or a related field from an accredited college/university.
  • Valid or eligible teaching license with an endorsement in Adaptive Physical Education or a related area.
  • Knowledge of physical education curriculum, adaptive strategies, and motor development.
  • Ability to implement accommodations and modifications for diverse learners.
  • Experience working with students with disabilities preferred.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
