This is a Medsurg Unit that is blended.  We have a thriving Swing Bed Program and also occasionally care for patients who are a PCU level of care.  We balance our assignments based on the Nursing workload and the level of care of the patients.  The ratios are 1:5 Medsurg. 1:5-6 for Swing Bed. 1:3-4 for PCU, based on if the patient is on a drip.  (If the Nurse is only Medsurg by background, no problem, the Supervisors do a fantastic job with assignments.)  

The shift is 7 PM to 7 AM, with every other holiday and every other weekend. There is no on- call.  

We have a super engaged team who help to lead several committees on the unit.  Of mention as well, St Joseph Memorial Hospital is a Pathways to Excellence designated facility through the ANCC, which I think speaks volumes when it comes to safety, quality care, a positive environment, and shared decision making!
