Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Emergency Department Registered Nurse (ED RN) to join a busy 18-bed Emergency Department. The department sees approximately 85–115 patients per day, with an average daily volume of around 100 patients.

The ideal candidate will be highly team-oriented, comfortable working in a fast-paced ED environment, and able to manage a diverse patient population with varying levels of acuity.

Required Certifications

• BLS – Required
• ACLS – Required
• PALS – Required
• NIHSS – Required

Emergency Department Details

• 18-bed Emergency Department
• Fast Track is staffed by mid-level providers and LVNs
• Typical RN ratio: 1:4
• ICU-level patient ratio: 1:2
• Shift Manager and Resource Nurse available
• ED Techs provide support and may be EMTs or aides from other hospital units
• Cerner EMR
• Philips telemetry
• Ventilators available
• Hospitalist/Intensivist support available in-house
• Emergency Department utilizes MDs
• No dedicated IV Team
• Respiratory Therapy available 24/7
• Pharmacy available 24/7
• Omnicell medication dispensing system

Patient Population

The department cares for a diverse emergency population, including:

• Adult emergency patients
• Some pediatric patients, though pediatric volume is lower than at the Mercy Southwest campus
• Correctional/justice-involved patients from CDCR facilities, accompanied by a correctional officer
• Homeless and underserved/indigent patient populations
• General emergency presentations across a wide range of acuity levels

Special Patient Flow

• OB patients are transferred to the other campus.
• Cardiac patients are not typically managed at this facility. Patients requiring cardiac care are stabilized and transferred to an appropriate facility.

Schedule

• 12-hour shifts
• Schedules are created in 4-week blocks
• Block scheduling is not permitted
• Travelers must have open availability
• PRN-type availability or scheduling around another job will not be accommodated
• This assignment must be the candidate's primary job

Weekend Requirement

4 weekend shifts per 4-week schedule

• Night Shift: Friday & Saturday
• Day Shift: Saturday & Sunday

Holiday Requirement

• Typically 1 major holiday + 1 minor holiday

Floating Requirements

Travelers may be required to float between the two affiliated facilities' Emergency Departments.

• The facilities are approximately 6.5 miles apart.
• Floating may occur before the shift or during the shift.
• If notified of a pre-shift float, approximately 2 hours' notice will be provided before the start of the shift.
• Mid-shift floating may also occur.

Candidates should be comfortable working at either ED location as required.

Orientation

3 unit-specific orientation shifts:

• 2 shifts at the primary campus
• 1 shift at the secondary campus

Hospital/system onboarding will also apply as required.

Dress Code

Navy Blue scrubs are required.

• Scrub jacket must also be navy blue
• Undershirt worn underneath scrub top must be:

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is a highly adaptable ED RN who:

• Has strong emergency nursing experience
• Is comfortable with a 1:4 patient ratio
• Can manage 1:2 assignments for ICU-level patients
• Works effectively in a high-volume environment
• Demonstrates excellent teamwork and communication
• Is comfortable caring for diverse and underserved patient populations
• Has open availability and can commit to the assignment as their primary job
• Is willing to float between the two affiliated ED campuses

Important Assignment Expectations

• This position requires open scheduling availability.
• The facility will not schedule around another employment commitment.
• Travelers must be willing to work the required weekend and holiday rotations.
• Strong teamwork and flexibility are essential for success in this high-volume Emergency Department.
