Position: Travel Registered Nurse (RN)

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Labor & Delivery Registered Nurse (RN) to join a high-risk Family Birth Center providing comprehensive care across Labor & Delivery, Obstetrics, and Postpartum (LDRP).

This position requires an experienced RN who is comfortable managing the complete continuum of obstetric care, including high-risk pregnancies, labor, delivery, postpartum/couplet care, and cesarean sections. The selected RN must be confident circulating C-sections and providing care from admission through delivery and postpartum recovery.

Unit & Facility Details

• L&D Beds: 10
• Postpartum Beds: 12
• C-Section OR Suites: 2
• Triage Beds: 3
• OB-ED/Antepartum Testing: 3 beds, also utilized for OB-ED overflow
• Birth Volume: Approximately 140–165 births per month
• Patient Population: High-risk obstetric patients
• Monitoring System: GE Corometrics / Fetalink surveillance
• Scrubs: Provided by facility

Patient Ratios

• Labor & Delivery: 1:1–1:2
• Couplet Care: 1:3–1:4
• Antepartum: 1:1–1:3
• Staffing follows AWHONN guidelines

Clinical Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive nursing care throughout the LDRP continuum
• Manage patients with high-risk obstetric conditions
• Perform maternal and fetal assessments throughout labor and delivery
• Monitor and interpret fetal heart rate patterns
• Provide postpartum and couplet care
• Circulate Cesarean sections independently — required
• Float to Mother-Baby (MB) as needed
• Administer and titrate Pitocin
• Assist with emergency deliveries and obstetric interventions
• Collaborate with OB providers, anesthesia, neonatology, NICU, and other members of the healthcare team
• Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation
• Follow AWHONN standards and facility-specific protocols

The unit commonly manages:

• Preterm labor
• Vaginal bleeding
• Labor inductions
• Cesarean sections
• Hypertension and pregnancy-related complications
• High-risk pregnancies
• Antepartum and postpartum patients

Required Qualifications & Certifications

• Previous Labor & Delivery experience – Required
• Experience with LDRP/Family Birth Center care – Required
• C-Section circulating experience – Required
• Must be comfortable providing couplet care
• Must be willing and able to float to Mother-Baby
• BLS – Required
• ACLS – Required
• NRP – Required
• AWHONN Advanced – Required
• STABLE – Preferred

Clinical Support

• Charge RN/House Supervisor: Generally does not carry a patient assignment but provides break relief
• OB Surgical Technicians: Available on the unit
• OB Hospitalist: In-house 24/7
• Neonatology: On call 24/7 and rounds daily
• Anesthesia: In-house 24/7
• Respiratory Equipment: No ventilators on the unit
• RNs are required to read and interpret maternal EKG strips in PACU

Schedule

• 12-hour shifts
• Shift begins at 6:45
• Bedside report
• Every other weekend (EOW)
• Holiday rotation with permanent staff
• Overtime and additional shifts may be available
• If placed on call, 30-minute response time is required

Floating Requirements

• No routine in-house floating
• Travelers may be required to float to other Sacramento-area facilities
• Mid-shift floating to another facility is rare but may occur based on operational needs

Baby Catcher / NRP Role

The Baby Catcher role, also known as the NRP role, may be assigned for the entire shift. This assignment may be covered by either NICU or L&D staff depending on staffing availability.

Submission Requirements

• 2 supervisory references required at submission
  • 1 reference within the last 12 months
  • 1 reference within the last 3 years
  • Charge RN references are accepted
• Copy of driver's license required at submission to validate legal name
• Candidates must not have been directly employed FT, PT, or PRN by a facility affiliated with CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity within the previous 12 months
• Candidates who worked PRN through an outside staffing firm may be considered

Holiday Requirements

Travelers are expected to work 2 of the 3 major holidays:

• Thanksgiving
• Christmas
• New Year's

Holiday time-off requests may be considered based on operational needs but are not guaranteed. Final scheduling decisions are made by the facility manager.

Prescreen / Offer Process

• Candidates may be prescreened and eligible for an auto-offer
• Manager has 24 hours to rescind an offer following the initial offer process
• Final scheduling and assignment details are subject to facility approval
