Job Breakdown

• Role: L&D RN – Labor & Delivery
• Setting: Acute Care
• Shift: 12-hour variable days/nights — mostly days
• Contract: 13 weeks
• Weekend: Every 3rd weekend
• Holiday: Every other holiday
• Call: No call
• Charting: Cerner
• BSN: Not required
• License: Required to submit

Unit Details

• Unit: L&D / Postpartum / Mother-Baby
• L&D beds: 11
• OR suites for C-sections: 1
• Triage beds: 1
• Approximately 320 births/year
  
  Patient Population / Experience
   
• The RN should have experience with:
• LDRP
• Labor and delivery
• Vaginal births
• C-sections
• C-section recovery, unless under general anesthesia
• Inductions
• Postpartum care
• Epidurals
• IV medications to induce labor
• Special care nursery babies may be encountered
• Antepartum patients: No.
   

• Required Certifications

• BLS – AHA
• NRP
   

• Important Clinical Skills

• The RN may need to manage/titrate:
• Epidurals
• IV medications used for labor induction
• The unit follows AWHONN guidelines for staffing ratios.

• Scheduling

• Self-scheduling available
• 12-hour shifts
• Nights are the biggest need, although the schedule can be variable
• No call
• Extra shifts may be available

• Floating

• The traveler may float to:
• Medical-Surgical
• PCU
• However, they will only assist as a helping hand/CNA/sitter and:
• Will not take a patient assignment
• Will not work outside their scope of practice

• Orientation

• 2 shifts of unit/department-specific orientation

• Scrubs

• Hospital-provided scrubs
