Job Description

General Summary

The Surgical Technologist helps care for surgical patients and supports the Surgery Department. They prepare the operating room, instruments, and supplies and assist the surgical team during procedures.

The Sterile Processing Tech cleans, checks, sterilizes, and prepares surgical instruments and equipment for use.

Surgical Tech Duties

• Prepare instruments and supplies for each surgery.
• Check the operating room and equipment before surgery.
• Scrub, gown, and glove self and other team members.
• Help drape the patient.
• Handle and check surgical instruments.
• Maintain sterile technique and report any breaks in sterility.
• Count sponges and sharps with the Circulating Nurse before and during surgery as required.
• Anticipate the surgeon’s needs during surgery.
• Assist the surgeon when needed.
• Handle and preserve surgical specimens properly.
• Clean and prepare the operating room after surgery.
• Prepare the room for the next procedure.
• Report equipment or instrument problems to the OR Supervisor.
• Help train and teach other staff.
• Restock supplies.
• Follow procedures for receiving and transporting patients.
• Attend staff meetings and training.
• Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality.
• Follow the chain of command and report important information to the supervisor.
• Work different shifts, weekends, and call as required.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Sterile Processing Tech Duties

• Clean and sterilize surgical instruments and equipment.
• Check equipment for broken, loose, or damaged parts.
• Operate autoclaves, sonic washers, and other sterilizing equipment.
• Organize surgical instrument trays.
• Maintain and organize inventory.
• Keep sterile storage areas properly stocked.
• Stock and check crash carts.
• Distribute instruments to the Surgery Department and other areas.
• Record sterilizer test results.
• Follow all cleaning and sterilization procedures.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Graduate of a Surgical Technologist training program/school OR at least one year of OR scrub nursing experience.
• Current BLS certification.
• Central Supply Technician certification is a plus.

Knowledge and Skills

• Knowledge of different surgical procedures and surgeon preferences.
• Knowledge of surgical instruments and their proper use.
• Knowledge of sterile techniques and medical asepsis.
• Knowledge of proper handling of specimens, cultures, and smears.
• Ability to properly set up the operating room.
• Ability to memorize and identify surgical instruments.
• Ability to manage and inventory supplies.
• Ability to tolerate blood and body tissue.
• Proper training in cleaning and safety procedures is required.
