Requirements

• Preferably 2 years of ICU experience outside travel assignments
• Candidates with 1.5 years of non-travel ICU experience and substantial other RN experience may be considered with management approval
• At least one completed travel assignment; first-time travelers are not accepted
• RN license through the South Dakota Board of Nursing
• BLS, ACLS, NIHSS, and TNCC; TNCC must be obtained before arrival
• Must live at least 100 miles from any Monument Health facility

Patient care

• Patients: High-acuity medical, surgical, cardiac, neuro, and trauma patients, including ARDS, MI, stroke, post-cath care, and multisystem trauma
• Ratios: Usually 1:1 or 1:2 based on acuity; 1:3 is rare
• Skills: Vasopressors, sedation, paralytics, hemodynamic lines, proning, ventilators, and telemetry
• Preferred: Cardiac experience, plus Impella, IABP, and CRRT
• Travelers are assigned to CVICU or fresh open-heart patients only when their experience supports it and the facility approves.

Schedule and other details

• Floating: Uncommon, but may include an adult Med/Surg or Tele floor with a 1:4 ratio
• Weekends: Every other weekend is the goal, but not guaranteed
• On-call: None
• Time off: Up to seven days, with a contract extension required to complete 13 weeks. No holiday RTO or RTO during the first three weeks of August for the Sturgis Bike Rally.
• Orientation: Department and online learning, followed by two 12-hour floor shifts
• Scrubs and parking: Navy scrubs; free parking
• May be asked to precept students.
