Facility: Aspirus Wausau Hospital
Location: Wausau, Wisconsin
Specialty: Surgical Technologist / Surgical Tech – General
Contract: 13 Weeks

Contract Weeks: 91 days
Guaranteed Hours: 40 hours/week
Shift: Variable Day Shifts – General Team
Shift Time Listed: 7:00 PM – 3:30 AM
Weekend: Call only
Holiday: Holiday rotation required
Position Overview
Aspirus Wausau Hospital is seeking an experienced Surgical Technologist to join the General OR Team for a 13-week travel assignment.
The Surgical Technologist will be responsible for preparing operating rooms, ensuring appropriate supplies and equipment are available, scrubbing surgical procedures across multiple specialties, and efficiently turning over rooms between cases.
The department has 21 operating rooms and handles approximately 40–60 cases per day, covering a wide range of surgical specialties.
This position requires a highly experienced traveler who can work independently in a high-volume hospital environment and has prior Level II Trauma experience and Da Vinci Robotics experience.
Schedule
- Shift: Variable day shifts on the General Team
- Guaranteed Hours: 40 hours/week
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Start Date: 11/30/2026
- Weekend: Call only
- Holiday: Holiday rotation required
- Orientation: GSA hours are not guaranteed during the week of orientation
- Low Census: Contract may include up to 36 hours of low-census unbillable time
- Travelers may be placed on call during low-census hours
- If called back during low census, applicable call-back pay will be provided
Call Requirements
Call is an important requirement for this assignment.
- 6–8 weeknight call shifts during the 13-week contract
- 1–2 weekend call shifts during the contract
- 30-minute response time required
- Traveler must be able to arrive and be ready in the OR within 30 minutes when called
- Traveler must have their own vehicle
- Uber/Lyft cannot be relied upon because of the call requirements
Radius Rule
Travelers must live outside a 50-mile radius of Aspirus Wausau Hospital.
- 50-mile radius rule is in effect
- Radius rule expires 10/9
Required Qualifications
Experience
- 4+ years of Surgical Technologist experience – REQUIRED
- Previous travel experience – REQUIRED
- Level II Trauma experience – REQUIRED
- Extensive OR experience
- Strong scrubbing experience – REQUIRED
- Experience working in a large-volume hospital strongly preferred
- Experience in a Level II Trauma facility required
- Must be comfortable working in a fast-paced OR environment
Da Vinci Robotics
Da Vinci Robotics experience is REQUIRED.
Candidate must have actual experience working with the Da Vinci robotic surgical system.
Required Surgical Experience
Candidates should have strong experience in as many of the following specialties as possible:
- General Surgery
- GYN
- Urology
- Plastics
- ENT
- GI
Strong GI experience is particularly valuable.
The candidate should also have broad surgical experience and be comfortable scrubbing a variety of cases.
Required Certifications
BLS – REQUIRED
- AHA or ARC accepted
- Aspirus requires BLS certification from AHA or ARC
Surgical Technologist Certification – REQUIRED
One of the following is accepted:
- NBSTSA
- NCCT
CST License
- CST certification/license is REQUIRED
Education Requirements
Required education includes:
- Associate Degree OR Certificate from a Surgical Technologist program
The candidate should have education providing knowledge of:
- Surgical standards
- Operating room practices
- Surgical procedures
- Sterile technique
- OR safety protocols
The facility specifies education normally acquired through graduation from a surgical technologist program along with 4+ years of related OR experience.
Primary Responsibilities
The Surgical Technologist will be responsible for:
Operating Room Setup
- Efficiently prepare and set up the operating room for surgical procedures
- Ensure all necessary equipment and supplies are available
- Review case carts before procedures
- Verify that required instruments and supplies are present
- Maintain proper sterile technique
Surgical Scrubbing
- Scrub surgical cases across multiple specialties
- Assist surgeons and other OR staff during procedures
- Demonstrate strong knowledge of surgical instruments and procedures
- Anticipate the needs of the surgical team
- Maintain a sterile field throughout procedures
Room Turnover
- Efficiently turn over operating rooms between procedures
- Prepare rooms for subsequent cases
- Maintain a clean and organized OR environment
- Help support efficient case flow throughout the day
Case Cart Management
- Review case carts
- Ensure all necessary supplies are available before procedures
- Identify missing supplies or equipment before the case begins
Team Support
- Work effectively with surgeons, nurses and other OR staff
- Assist with multiple specialties
- Help train new hires when needed
- Participate in downtime tasks when required
- Maintain flexibility based on department needs

Traveler may be required to float to other Aspirus facilities if needed:

Vaccination Policy
During flu season:
- Travelers who decline flu and COVID vaccination will be required to wear a mask at all times
- No exceptions to this Aspirus policy
- Failure to follow the policy may result in corrective action
