Neuro ICU Registered Nurse (RN) – Travel Contract
Department: Neuro ICU
Position: Registered Nurse (RN)
Unit Size: 18 Beds
Patient Ratio: 1:2
Shift: 12-Hour Shifts
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Neuro ICU Registered Nurse (RN) to provide high-acuity care to critically ill neurological patients. The ideal candidate will have strong ICU experience and demonstrated competency in neurocritical care, including ventriculostomy management, stroke care, ventilators, arterial and central lines, and post-craniectomy patients.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive nursing care for Neuro ICU patients in a 1:2 nurse-to-patient ratio.
- Care for patients with complex neurological conditions, including:
- Ventriculostomies
- Ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes, including patients receiving tPA
- Post-craniectomy patients
- Other acute neurological and critical-care conditions
- Perform and document NIH Stroke Scale assessments.
- Manage patients requiring mechanical ventilation and other respiratory support.
- Monitor and manage arterial and central lines.
- Titrate ICU medications and vasoactive/critical-care drips according to physician orders and hospital protocols.
- Monitor cardiac rhythms using Philips telemetry/monitoring systems and independently interpret strips.
- Collaborate with physicians, respiratory therapists, patient care technicians, and other members of the interdisciplinary team.
- Provide safe, evidence-based care in a fast-paced critical-care environment.
- Float to other hospital units as required. Travelers float first and may be assigned to intermediate or general floors based on hospital needs.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Active Illinois RN license or confirmation that the Illinois license application process has been initiated.
- Previous Neuro ICU/ICU experience.
- Required certifications:
- BLS
- ACLS
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) Certification
- Demonstrated experience with:
- Ventriculostomy
- Ventilators
- Arterial lines
- Central lines
- tPA
- Acute stroke management
- Post-craniectomy care
- ICU drip titration
- Ability to independently assess and interpret cardiac rhythms.
Staffing & Support
- Charge nurse is available on each shift; the charge nurse may take a patient assignment when staffing requires.
- House Supervisor available 24/7.
- Patient Care Technicians/Nurse Aides are staffed at approximately 1:9.
- Telemetry technicians are staffed on every shift.
- Respiratory therapy support is available; RNs are expected to manage/troubleshoot applicable respiratory equipment.
Scheduling Requirements
- 12-hour shifts
- Every other weekend
- Rotating holiday requirement, approximately every other holiday
- No call/standby requirement
- Travelers float first when hospital staffing requires it.
- Floating may include intermediate care and general medical/surgical units:
- Intermediate: approximately 1:3 ratio
- General floor: approximately 1:4 ratio
Orientation
- Unit-specific orientation: 20 hours
- One 8-hour shift
- One 12-hour shift
- 12 hours of non-billable orientation; guaranteed hours do not apply during orientation.
OSF Contract Policies & Important Notes
- Local Rate: Clinicians with a permanent address within 50 miles are subject to a $25 reduction to regular and overtime bill rates.
- Call-Off Policy: Equivalent of 12 hours per 13-week contract may be called off without penalty or payment for the shift.
- OSF is a Drug-Free Campus. Candidates must understand and agree to complete a drug screen and produce a negative result for all required panels.
