Description
Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive nursing care to emergency patients in a 33-room Emergency Department.
- Perform rapid triage, initial assessment, ongoing reassessment, and prioritization of patients based on acuity.
- Care for approximately 210 patients per day across the department.
- Manage patients with routine and complex emergency conditions, including cardiac, neurological, respiratory, trauma, and other acute presentations.
- Recognize and respond to signs of clinical deterioration and initiate appropriate emergency interventions.
- Care for patients requiring cardiac monitoring using GE telemetry.
- Administer medications, IV fluids, and treatments safely according to provider orders and hospital protocols.
- Perform and/or assist with EKGs and other emergency diagnostic procedures.
- Monitor and document patient responses to treatments and interventions.
- Care for ER holds/boarded patients while maintaining appropriate monitoring and continuity of care.
- Collaborate with physicians, mid-level providers, respiratory therapists, ER technicians, pharmacy, and other interdisciplinary team members.
- Provide care for patients with suspected stroke and STEMI, stabilizing patients and preparing them for transfer when indicated.
- Participate in emergency response, resuscitation, and other critical-care interventions within the ER.
- Provide appropriate care for pediatric emergency patients within the department's capabilities.
- Maintain accurate, timely, and comprehensive documentation in the Cerner EMR.
- Follow EMTALA requirements and hospital policies for emergency evaluation, stabilization, and treatment.
- Provide patient/family education, discharge instructions, and follow-up information.
- Prepare patients for admission, transfer, or discharge and provide complete handoff reports.
- Maintain patient safety, infection-control, medication-safety, and quality-care standards.
- Work with the charge nurse and appropriately delegate tasks to ER technicians.
- Maintain required BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS competencies throughout the assignment.
Requirements
Active RN license eligible for submission.
Minimum required certifications:
BLS
ACLS
NIHSS
Cerner EMR experience is required. The resume should clearly identify the facility/facilities where Cerner was used and indicate whether the experience is recent.
Previous Emergency Department (ER/ED) nursing experience required.
Strong emergency assessment, critical-thinking, prioritization, and clinical decision-making skills.
Strong and thorough clinical documentation skills.
Ability to care for patients with a wide range of emergency conditions and acuities.
Ability to manage approximately 1:4 nurse-to-patient ratios.
Comfortable caring for ER holds/boarded patients when required.
Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with physicians, mid-level providers, RTs, ER technicians, pharmacy, and other healthcare professionals.
Willingness to work 12-hour night shifts (7 PM–7 AM).
Availability for 2 weekends per 4 weeks and holidays as required.
Willingness to follow the department's navy-blue scrub dress code.
Ability to complete up to 6 shifts of unit-specific orientation with a preceptor.
BSN is not required.
No floating outside of the ER is expected.
Must be able to meet the hospital's scheduling requirements; specific scheduling requests cannot be guaranteed.
