NICU Respiratory Therapist – Nights

Facility: UNMH / University of New Mexico Hospital
Specialty: RRT – NICU
Shift: 6:00 PM–6:30 AM
Schedule: 4x12-hour nights
Contract: 126 weeks
Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours/week
Local Rule: No locals within 100 miles

Required Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years of recent NICU/PICU experience
• NICU and PICU experience are both required
• NM Respiratory Therapist License
• RRT
• BLS
• ACLS
• NRP
• Trauma Level I experience
• Cerner/charting system experience
• Strong experience with:
  • High Frequency Jet Ventilator (HFJV)
  • High Frequency Oscillator (HFOV)
  • Pediatric Critical Care
  • Endotracheal tube care/suctioning
  • Extubation
  • Nasal and oral airway placement/suctioning
  • Tracheostomy suctioning/care
  • Pulmonary hygiene
  • ABG interpretation

HFJV/HFOV: Candidate must self-rate 4. Candidates rating 1–2 should not be submitted. Candidates rating 3 may be screened if they have true children's hospital experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• PALS
• Community hospital experience
• Puritan Bennett or Dräger ventilator experience

Unit & Facility Details

• Level I Trauma Center
• Teaching hospital
• Children's Hospital
• Short-term acute care
• 554 staffed beds
• Daily census: 6–10 ventilated patients
• Patient population includes neonates, infants, pediatrics, adolescents, and adults
• Also services a Level III NICU
• Equipment/clinical environment includes HFOV, HFJV, inhaled nitric oxide (iNO), and advanced ventilator support
• Charting: Cerner
• Scrubs: Royal Blue
• Parking: No fee

Scheduling & Floating

• Weekend shifts required as needed
• No more than 3 consecutive weekends
• May float to the Adult RRT unit as needed
• Block scheduling: Not available
• Must work 2 of 3 holiday bundles:
  • Thanksgiving & day after
  • Christmas Eve & Christmas Day
  • New Year's Eve & New Year's Day

Compliance

• RTO: Maximum 7 days preferred
• No RTO during the first 7 days or last day of the contract
• Non-local driver's license required
• Flu vaccine required; medical/religious exemptions allowed
• COVID vaccine optional
• Drug screen within 30 days of start
• Compliance documents due 10 days before start
• New contracts/extensions must be at least 10 weeks
• After 1 year or 4 consecutive assignments, a 6-month system break is required
• Former staff must have 12 months of separation
