RN – Multi Care Unit (ICU/PCU/MST) Breakdown

Position: RN – Multi Care Unit / Acuity Adaptable Unit
Setting: Acute Care Hospital
Shift: 12-hour Nights
Schedule: Every other weekend
Guaranteed: 36 hours/week
Contract: 13 weeks
EMR: Cerner
 

🏥 Unit

• 10-bed Multi Care Unit
• One unit with three acuity levels: ICU, PCU, and MST
• RN may care for different acuity levels depending on patient assignment.

👩‍⚕️ Ratios

• ICU: 1:2
• PCU: 1:4
• MST: 1:5–6
• If no CNA/NA, RN may take 1:3 and provide primary care for PCU/MST patients.
• NAs normally cover 10–15 patients.

🚨 Experience – MUST HAVE

• 2 years ICU experience required
• They may consider:
  • 1 year ICU + 1 year PCU/Med-Surg if the candidate worked in a larger facility and has strong skills.
• Must be comfortable caring for ICU and PCU-level patients.

💊 ICU Skills

• Drip titration required
• Sedation drips
• Vasopressors
• Insulin drips
• Bedside cardiac monitoring
• 12-lead EKG
• Ventilator, BiPAP, and CPAP patients
• Dysrhythmia recognition

🩺 Common Diagnoses

ICU:

• Sepsis
• Respiratory arrest
• COPD
• Pneumonia/COVID
• DKA
• Drug/alcohol withdrawal
• Suicide attempts
• Post-op complications
• Abnormal blood pressure/heart rate

PCU:

• Patients requiring non-titratable infusions for heart rate or blood pressure management.

📜 Required Certifications

• BLS
• ACLS
• Active license required for submission

📝 Dysrhythmia Exam – IMPORTANT

The candidate must pass the dysrhythmia exam with at least 80% within 2 attempts before signing the contract.

If they fail both attempts:

• DNU for CS AZ and Sacramento for 6 months.

🗓️ Schedule

• 12-hour nights:
  • 7:00 PM–7:30 AM
  • or 7:30 PM–7:30 AM
• Every other weekend
  • Nights: Friday & Saturday
• Holiday rotation required
• Low census may require rotating standby.

🔄 Floating – IMPORTANT

Candidate must be willing to float:

• To EC MST & Pediatric unit for adult MST assignments
• To West Campus in Prescott for ICU/PCU assignments
• May take a Med-Surg assignment, approximately 1:5
• May care for adult patients located in the pediatric unit
• 2-hour notice before floating

🖥️ Other

• Remote monitor techs monitor PCU/MST patients.
• RNs must read/interpret strips as required.
• RNs perform 12-lead EKGs.
• RT supports vents, BiPAP, and CPAP.
• Any scrub color except camouflage.
