Description
Travel Psychiatric RN
Specialty: Inpatient Psychiatric / Behavioral Health
Home unit: Geriatric Psychiatry
Location: Des Moines, Iowa
Shift: Nights, 11:00 PM–7:00 AM
Schedule: Monday–Friday nights, with every other weekend required
Hours: 40 hours per week listed
EMR: EPIC
Scrub color: Solid navy blue
Orientation dates: November 9 or November 23; November 9 is strongly preferred.
Patient population and unit details
The position serves acute psychiatric patients with major mental health conditions and behavioral challenges, including:
- Mania and acute psychiatric symptoms
- Chronic behavioral concerns
- Aggression and potential violence
- Self-harm risk
- Geriatric psychiatric needs
- Adolescent and adult psychiatric patients
Unit bed counts:
- Geriatric: 12 beds
- Adolescent: 12 beds
- Adult: 24 beds
Patient ratios: May be as high as 1:4–6, depending on the unit and shift.
Required qualifications
- Active Iowa RN license or valid compact/multistate license at submission.
- At least 15 months of psychiatric/behavioral health experience.
- EPIC experience.
- Recent or current inpatient experience is highly preferred.
- Experience caring for geriatric, adult, and adolescent patients is required.
- Current AHA or American Red Cross BLS certification.
- Ability to manage behavioral emergencies and safely use restraints according to facility policy.
First-time travelers: Accepted with at least 12 months of psychiatric/behavioral health experience, subject to the other requirements.
