Registered Nurse – PCU Float (Night Shift)

Job Overview

• Float position covering Progressive Care Unit (PCU) and Medical-Surgical (MS) units.
• Must be comfortable working across all PCU and MS units.
• Night shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:45 PM – 7:15 AM).
• Staffing needs re-evaluated every 4 hours; may float 2-3 times per shift.
• Weekend requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts in a 6-week block.
• Must work one holiday per 13-week contract.
• First-time travelers and local candidates accepted.

Required Qualifications

Licenses & Certifications

• Valid RN license in Virginia.
• ACLS issued by American Heart Association.
• BLS issued by American Heart Association.

Education

• Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing.

Experience & Skills

• Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year.
• Experience in blood product administration.
• Central line care experience.
• Tracheostomy management experience.
• Non-invasive airway support experience including nasal cannula, CPAP/BiPAP, and chest tubes (Emerson/PleurEvac).
• Dysrhythmia interpretation and management experience.
• Experience titrating cardiac drips.
• Rapid Response/Code team response experience.
• PCA protocol management experience.
• Heparin protocol management experience.
• Endocrine and metabolic condition management experience.
• Experience with Epic electronic health record system.

Unit Details

• PCU nurse-to-patient ratio: approximately 5:1.
• MS nurse-to-patient ratio: approximately 6:1, may flex up to 7:1.

Scheduling & Policies

• Shift pattern: 3 twelve-hour night shifts per week.
• Call-off policy: Allowed 1 shift call-off per 2 weeks.
• All requests for time off, block scheduling, or special scheduling must be submitted with application.

Required Documentation & Compliance

• Valid Driver’s License/State ID with an address within 100 miles of the facility required within 48 hours of signing.
• Background check covering 7 years of history required within 1 year of start date.
• E-Verify or attestation required.
• Education verification of highest earned degree required; transcript or diploma may be requested.
• Primary source verification of state license must be run within 30 days of start.
• NURSYS verification required for all RNs within 30 days of start.
• Physical exam within 1 year confirming freedom from communicable diseases.
• Fit test for N95 or equivalent mask within 1 year, updated annually.
• Negative TB test (PPD, QGold, or TSpot) within 1 year, updated annually; if previously positive, clear chest X-ray within 1 year and annual TB questionnaire required.
• Required immunizations or positive titers: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B (vaccine series, positive titer, or declination).
• Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start.
• Flu vaccination or signed declination form required during flu season.
• Two clinical references required.
• Completion of employment application/resume and annual skills checklist.
• Completion of facility-specific compliance and confidentiality agreements prior to start.
• Professional photo for badge required.

Additional Notes

• EPIC charting experience required.
• Magnet-designated hospital with Level I Trauma Center status.
• Hospital offers advanced specialty care including cardiovascular and stroke services.
• Prior travel experience is not required.
• Orientation manual review required prior to start (not required for inpatient RNs as of 7/10/23).

This position is ideal for RNs with telemetry and stepdown experience who are comfortable floating between PCU and MS units on night shifts in a high-acuity, teaching hospital environment.
