Registered Nurse – PCU Float (Night Shift)
Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Float position covering Progressive Care Unit (PCU) and Medical-Surgical (MS) units.
- Must be comfortable working across all PCU and MS units.
- Night shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:45 PM – 7:15 AM).
- Staffing needs re-evaluated every 4 hours; may float 2-3 times per shift.
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts in a 6-week block.
- Must work one holiday per 13-week contract.
- First-time travelers and local candidates accepted.
Required Qualifications
Licenses & Certifications
- Valid RN license in Virginia.
- ACLS issued by American Heart Association.
- BLS issued by American Heart Association.
Education
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing.
Experience & Skills
- Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year.
- Experience in blood product administration.
- Central line care experience.
- Tracheostomy management experience.
- Non-invasive airway support experience including nasal cannula, CPAP/BiPAP, and chest tubes (Emerson/PleurEvac).
- Dysrhythmia interpretation and management experience.
- Experience titrating cardiac drips.
- Rapid Response/Code team response experience.
- PCA protocol management experience.
- Heparin protocol management experience.
- Endocrine and metabolic condition management experience.
- Experience with Epic electronic health record system.
Unit Details
- PCU nurse-to-patient ratio: approximately 5:1.
- MS nurse-to-patient ratio: approximately 6:1, may flex up to 7:1.
Scheduling & Policies
- Shift pattern: 3 twelve-hour night shifts per week.
- Call-off policy: Allowed 1 shift call-off per 2 weeks.
- All requests for time off, block scheduling, or special scheduling must be submitted with application.
Required Documentation & Compliance
- Valid Driver’s License/State ID with an address within 100 miles of the facility required within 48 hours of signing.
- Background check covering 7 years of history required within 1 year of start date.
- E-Verify or attestation required.
- Education verification of highest earned degree required; transcript or diploma may be requested.
- Primary source verification of state license must be run within 30 days of start.
- NURSYS verification required for all RNs within 30 days of start.
- Physical exam within 1 year confirming freedom from communicable diseases.
- Fit test for N95 or equivalent mask within 1 year, updated annually.
- Negative TB test (PPD, QGold, or TSpot) within 1 year, updated annually; if previously positive, clear chest X-ray within 1 year and annual TB questionnaire required.
- Required immunizations or positive titers: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B (vaccine series, positive titer, or declination).
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start.
- Flu vaccination or signed declination form required during flu season.
- Two clinical references required.
- Completion of employment application/resume and annual skills checklist.
- Completion of facility-specific compliance and confidentiality agreements prior to start.
- Professional photo for badge required.
Additional Notes
- EPIC charting experience required.
- Magnet-designated hospital with Level I Trauma Center status.
- Hospital offers advanced specialty care including cardiovascular and stroke services.
- Prior travel experience is not required.
- Orientation manual review required prior to start (not required for inpatient RNs as of 7/10/23).
This position is ideal for RNs with telemetry and stepdown experience who are comfortable floating between PCU and MS units on night shifts in a high-acuity, teaching hospital environment.
