Registered Nurse – MS/Telemetry Unit
Location: Rochester, New York
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks (with possible extension)
Shift: 4x12 hour shifts, rotating day (7:00 AM – 7:00 PM) and night (7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
Floating: Required
Local Candidates: Not accepted; must live more than 75 miles away
Unit & Patient Population
- High volume Medical-Surgical/Telemetry unit
- Patient ratio experience required: 1:6 (must be able to manage 1:5 to 1:7)
- Complex care unit including medicine, orthopedic overflow, and complex long-term patients
- Patient care involves telemetry monitoring, use of rapid response/code teams, pacemakers (temporary and permanent), feeding tubes, blood product administration, central and peripheral line care, PICC line management, IV starts, heparin protocols, orthopedic trauma, total joint replacements, surgical drains, high flow nasal cannula, tracheostomy management, isolation precautions, wound care including wound vac
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in New York
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Minimum 1 year of Med Surg / Telemetry experience within the last year
- Patient ratio experience required: 1:6, with ability to manage 1:5 to 1:7 on a MedSurg unit
- Charge nurse experience
- BLS issued by American Heart Association
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Experience with Epic electronic charting system
- Skills in pacemaker care (temporary and permanent), PICC line management, IV starts, heparin protocols
- Experience with orthopedic trauma, total joint replacements, surgical drains, and high flow nasal cannula (HFNC)

Facility & Work Environment
- Tertiary care hospital with 528 staffed beds
- Uniform scrub color: navy on bottom, navy or white on top
- Electronic charting system: EPIC
Compliance & Onboarding Requirements
- Government-issued photo ID required
- 7-year criminal background check (felony checks) within 3 months of start
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 3 months of start and monthly thereafter
- Education verification from primary source required (no hard copy degrees accepted)
- Foreign equivalency education evaluation required if applicable
- State license primary source verification within 30 days of start
- NURSYS verification for RN license within 30 days of start
- Various certifications as required by unit (ACLS, PALS, NRP, TNCC, EFM) depending on unit needs
- Orientation safety manual acknowledgement required
- Medication/pharmacology competency exam as required
- Color blindness testing required once
- Competency exams as required by specialty
- Passport-style photo for badge required
- Physical exam within 1 year of start, updated annually
- Fit mask (N95) testing within 1 year, updated annually
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, with additional requirements if positive
- Immunizations or titers required for: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
- Drug screening within 30 days of start
- Seasonal flu vaccination or signed declination required during flu season
- Snellen eye exam within 1 year of start
- COVID vaccination copy preferred but not required
Additional Notes
- Floating to other units is required
- Candidates must be able to handle a high patient volume and acuity
- References required for direct hire candidates (2 references within 3 years)
- Employment application and work history verification required
- Fingerprinting and additional background checks may be required for certain units (mental health, behavioral health, home health aide, long-term care)
This position is ideal for experienced MedSurg/Telemetry RNs comfortable with complex patient care, telemetry monitoring, and working in a fast-paced tertiary care environment.
