Registered Nurse – Emergency Room (ER)

Location: Tucson, Arizona
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Hours per Week: 36


Job Overview

  • Work in a large, urban, fast-paced Emergency Department with significant patient volume (~210 visits/day)
  • Support Patient Care Technicians (PCT) and Medics
  • Patient ratio approximately 1:5
  • Level 1 trauma experience preferred
  • Ventilated patient care experience required
  • Every other weekend coverage required (4 weekend shifts per contract)
  • EPIC electronic medical record system experience required
  • No first-time travelers accepted (prior travel experience required)
  • No local candidates accepted

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Arizona
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum 2 years of Emergency Department (ED) nursing experience, including experience within the last year
  • One completed travel assignment
  • Certifications:
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) – American Heart Association
    • BLS (Basic Life Support) – American Heart Association or American Red Cross
    • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) – American Heart Association or American Red Cross
    • De-escalation certification such as CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute), MAB (Management of Assaultive Behavior), or MOAB
  • Experience with EPIC electronic medical record system

Orientation

  • Orientation held twice monthly
  • Orientation attendance required prior to assignment start

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Current driver’s license or state ID with correct name/address
  • Background checks including:
    • 7-year history including all counties and states lived/worked
    • National Sex Offender Search
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start
  • Employment application with last 7 years of work history and explanation of gaps over 30 days
  • Two professional references from employment within last 3 years (one supervisory)
  • Skills checklist updated annually
  • Facility-specific job description acknowledgment
  • Orientation safety manual acknowledgment
  • Pass/Fail testing (EKG/Medication) with minimum 80% score; remediation and retesting required if failed
  • Medication test/pharmacology competency exam with minimum 80% score
  • HIPAA competency with minimum 80% score, updated annually

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, signed by physician, NP, or PA
  • Fit testing for N95 mask within 1 year of start (PAPR allowed onsite)
  • Negative TB test (QuantiFERON Gold, Tspot, or PPD) within 3 months of start; if positive, chest x-ray within 1 year showing no active TB
  • Immunizations or proof of immunity (vaccines or titers) for:
    • Measles (Rubeola) – 2 vaccines or positive IgG titer; no declinations allowed
    • Mumps – 2 vaccines or positive IgG titer; no declinations allowed
    • Rubella – 2 vaccines or positive IgG titer; no declinations allowed
    • Varicella – 2 vaccines or positive IgG titer; no declinations allowed
    • Hepatitis B – 3 vaccines or positive titer; declinations allowed with signed form within past year
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap – full vaccine within past 10 years; declinations allowed except for Pediatrics, PICU, Pediatric ER, Mom & Baby, Labor & Delivery units (mandatory there)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination required during flu season (Oct 1 – Apr 30) or approved medical/religious exemption with facility-specific form

Drug Testing

  • 12-panel drug test required within 30 days of assignment start and must be started within 72 hours of booking

Additional Notes

  • Pass/fail testing consequences: failing twice may result in contract cancellation
  • Must be able to work night shifts and meet weekend coverage requirements
  • Experience with ventilated patients and high-volume ED preferred
  • Must be able to support a fast-paced, high-acuity environment

This position is ideal for experienced Emergency Room Registered Nurses with prior travel contract experience seeking a challenging role in a busy urban hospital setting.
