Registered Nurse (RN) – Intermediate Care Unit (IMU)
Location: Wheeling, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights
Hours: 12-hour shifts (7:00 PM – 7:00 AM), 36 hours per week
Unit Details
- Intermediate Care Unit with 30 beds (14 private, 16 semi-private)
- Patient-to-nurse ratio goal: 1:4; typically 1:5, occasionally 1:6
- Telemetry monitors used: Nihon Kohden
- Nurses must be able to read and interpret telemetry strips (Tele Techs available)
- Respiratory equipment managed by Respiratory Therapists (RT) 24/7
- Hospitalist and in-house residents available 24/7
- IV team available 24/7; IV team performs all IV starts
- Pharmacy available 24/7 with Pyxis system
- Charge nurses take full patient assignments on all shifts
- Nurse aides (2-3 CNAs) support with ratios of 1:10-12
Patient Population / Common Diagnoses
- Chest pain, rule out MI, congestive heart failure (CHF), arrhythmias
- Post pacemaker care, pre/post cardiac catheterizations (manage radial bands, groin checks)
- Patients on Tikosyn therapy
- Intermediate acuity overflow patients
- Rarely manage chest tubes
Scheduling & Work Requirements
- Must work 4 weekend night shifts per 4-week schedule
- Night shift is the only straight shift; day shift nurses must work minimum 3 night shifts per 4 weeks
- Flexibility required for holiday shifts, though holidays are usually covered by permanent staff
- Self-scheduling allowed with up to 4 requested days off per month
- Floating required as needed to Telemetry or MedSurg units (ratios up to 1:6, rarely 1:7 in MedSurg)
Orientation
- First day: ~4 hours HR, then 8 hours on unit with preceptor
- Second day: On unit with preceptor
- After orientation, nurse works independently
Required Certifications & Skills
- Current RN license for West Virginia
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale) certification
- Ability to titrate drips including Amiodarone, Cardizem, Dopamine, Dobutamine, Labetalol, Nitro, Heparin, and occasionally Lasix
- Must have an unexpired driver’s license and be within a 50-mile radius for submission

- EMR system: Sunrise
- Scrub color: Navy blue top and bottom, navy scrub jackets, no hoodies
- Licensing issues must be disclosed at time of submission
