Neuro ICU Travel Nurse Opportunity
Location: Phoenix, Arizona
Facility: St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center
Facility Overview
- 607-bed tertiary care hospital
- Nationally recognized for quality care, medical education, and research
- Specialties include lung, liver, and kidney transplants
- Affiliated with Barrow Neurological Institute, the world’s #1 neuro institute
- Teaching hospital with nursing students
Unit Details
- Unit: Neuro ICU
- Unit Size: 32 beds
- Patient Ratio: 1:2
- Level 1 Trauma Center experience required
- EMR: Cerner
- Charge Nurse role available (does not take patients)
- Telemetry monitors: Phillips
- Ventilators and Respiratory Therapy available 24/7
- Pharmacy available 24/7
- Shifts: 12-hour (7am-7pm or 7pm-7am)
- Floating required across all ICU and Tele units (Tele patient load 4:1)
- Floor-specific orientation: 2 shifts
- Work into core staff rotation including holidays (4 weekend shifts per 4 weeks, 2 out of 4 major holidays)
Candidate Requirements
- Minimum 2 years of ICU experience in a large hospital (450+ beds)
- Level 1 Trauma experience required
- 3-6 months previous travel experience required
- Must have Neuro ICU experience including strong neuro assessment skills and ICP monitoring
- Must have EVD (External Ventricular Drain) experience
- Previous travel experience in ED or Neuro ICU required
- Cerner EMR experience required for ED
- Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam required 24-48 hours prior to acceptance (max 2 attempts; failure results in 6-month disqualification in CommonSpirit AZ and Sacramento region)
- ACLS and BLS certifications required
- No first-time travelers accepted
- Must be free of facial piercings and have natural hair color (no unnatural colors)
- Men must be clean-shaven for fit testing
- Must pass a Day 1 pass/fail exam during orientation
- SIMs Lab completion required (Foley catheter insertion & central line dressing changes) with strict sterile field adherence
- Must be able to float to Medical-Surgical Telemetry floors
- Travel teams must have their own vehicles
- Cannot hold concurrent contracts with Dignity AZ
- Must have been off CommonSpirit permanent staff for 12 months to qualify for travel assignment
Contract Length
- Minimum contract length: 13 weeks
Additional Notes
- Parking assigned with shuttle service to facility (night shift parking in garage)
- Candidates may be expected to work with nursing students
- Facility enforces strict onboarding deadlines (all paperwork must be complete by Wednesday 1pm CST before start)
- Day 1 exam study guide provided
- Must comply with hospital policies on appearance and conduct
- Floating includes all ICU floors and Telemetry units with varying patient loads
This position is ideal for experienced Neuro ICU nurses with strong critical care skills, trauma experience, and previous travel assignments who are comfortable working in a high-acuity, teaching hospital environment.
