Registered Nurse - PreOp (Travel/Contract)
Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
- Work in an outpatient cardiac area supporting pre/post cardiac catheterization (cath lab), electrophysiology (EP), and interventional radiology (IR) patients.
- Responsibilities include preparing patients for procedures, starting IVs, obtaining consents, administering pre-procedure medications, and managing post-procedure care including sheath pulls and access site management (arterial and venous, femoral and radial).
- Manage same-day discharges for post-PCI patients and care for EP device cases and ablations.
- Use unit systems such as Pyxis, EPIC, and SBAR for medication, documentation, and communication.
- Float to cardiac units as required.
Schedule & Work Details
- Shift: 4 days per week, 9-hour shifts (rotating schedule) with guaranteed 48 hours/week.
- Shift times vary: 06:00-15:00, 07:00-16:00, 08:00-17:00, or 12:00-20:00.
- No weekend, holiday, or on-call requirements.
- Return to office (RTO) within 7 days maximum.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina.
- Minimum 3 years of pre/post cath lab nursing experience, with at least some experience within the last year.
- Completion of at least one travel nursing assignment.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
- Current ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
- Experience with pulmonary artery lines, triage, sheath pulls, and cardiac medications.
Preferred Qualifications
- Charge nurse experience.
- Conscious sedation experience.
Patient Population & Diagnoses
- Cardiac catheterization patients, electrophysiology patients, radiology patients undergoing biopsies and invasive procedures.
- Outpatient surgery patients related to cardiac and radiology procedures.
Orientation & Training
- Unit orientation: 24 hours.
- Must complete facility-specific education modules prior to start (approx. 8-10 hours for acute care).
- Medication safety training and competency exams required.
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 72 hours of start (minimum 82% score, with remediation process if needed).
Compliance & Background Requirements
- Background checks including local, federal, national criminal databases, sex offender search, and education verification required within 90 days of start.
- Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start.
- Physical exam within 1 year of start; if past positive TB, physical within 30 days required.
- Immunizations and titers required: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B (or facility-specific declination), Flu vaccination or approved exemption.
- Fit testing for N95 mask or completion of PAPR training required within 1 year of start.
- TB testing: Negative PPD, Qgold, or Tspot within 1 year; if positive, chest x-ray within 5 years and annual physician-signed TB questionnaire required.
Facility & Badge Requirements
- Passport-style photo on white background required immediately after signing contract for badge creation.
- Confidentiality agreement, hospital policies acknowledgment, and other facility-specific documents must be signed prior to start.
- Must complete annual compliance training and facility-specific education modules.
- Radiation badge required if working in cath lab or radiology areas.
References & Documentation
- Two professional references within three years required for travel and acute care positions.
- Employment application and skills checklist must be submitted.
- Performance evaluation required if worked with the agency over one year.
Additional Notes
- Float to cardiac units may be required.
- No weekend or holiday shifts.
- No on-call duties.
- Contract lengths accepted: 13 or 26 weeks.
This position is ideal for experienced cath lab RNs with prior travel assignments who are comfortable managing complex cardiac patients in an outpatient procedural setting.
