Registered Nurse – Oncology Acute

Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 26 weeks (approximately 6 months)
Shift: Nights
Hours: 12-hour shifts, typically 36 hours per week


Unit Overview

  • 19 private beds in Oncology Acute
  • Patient types: All cancer types (commonly lymphoma and leukemia), hematology, medical patients, radiation oncology, and gynecologic oncology
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios: Generally 1:5 on days and 1:6 on nights; can vary between 1:4-5 (days) and 1:5-6 (nights)
  • 1:1 staffing for specific medications/therapies as needed
  • Charge Nurse present 24/7; may occasionally take patient assignments
  • House supervisor available 24/7
  • Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) support the unit: 3 PCTs during day shift (0700-1930), 2 PCTs during night shift (1900-0730)

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Administer IV chemotherapy and immunotherapy regimens, including handling precautions and PPE use
  • Monitor patients for side effects of chemotherapy and immunotherapy medications
  • No nurse titration of drips; medication adjustments require physician orders
  • Common set-rate drips include heparin and chemotherapy (e.g., 24-hour Methotrexate bags)
  • Manage CPAP equipment; troubleshoot BiPAP only if it is the patient’s home regimen
  • Telemetry monitoring provided by house-wide telemetry techs; RNs are not required to interpret strips (Phillips monitors used)

Required Certifications & Licenses

  • Active Illinois RN license (or application in process)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification from AHA
  • ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Certificate

Experience Requirements

  • Experience with IV chemotherapy and immunotherapy administration, including safe handling and monitoring

Orientation & Scheduling
