Registered Nurse (RN) - Step Down / PCU

Location

Contract Length

  • 13 weeks

Shift

  • Night shift (7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
  • Weekend hours as required by facility
  • No call requirements

Unit Information

  • Unit: Neuro Trauma Intermediate PCU (Step Down)
  • Number of beds: 26
  • Patient ratio: 3:1 or 4:1
  • Patient types: Neuro, trauma, alcohol withdrawal, respiratory distress, insulin drips
  • Equipment used: Philips monitors, chest tubes, arterial lines, wound vacs, drains, external ventricular drains (EVDs), Nicom, BIPAP, Airvo
  • Electronic Medical Record (EMR): EPIC

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Missouri
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum of 1 year of stepdown experience within the last year
  • ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care using the nursing process: assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation
  • Care for patients post trauma, surgical interventions, and with medical comorbidities
  • Coordinate patient care with ancillary departments
  • Maintain patient rights and confidentiality
  • Maintain professional accountability and evaluate care effectiveness
  • Float on a rotational basis to critical care cluster or medical/surgical units

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

  • Stand and walk most of the time during shifts
  • Frequent bending, stooping, lifting, and turning patients with assistance
  • Ability to push, pull, and grip up to 50 lbs; pinch up to 15 lbs; minimal kneeling, crouching, and crawling
  • Exposure to blood and body fluids
  • May work varying schedules and shifts based on patient care needs

Additional Information

  • Flu vaccination or approved exemption required from November 1 to April 1; declinations not accepted
  • Dress code: Black scrubs or Mercy-logo attire only; no other scrub colors allowed
  • Night shift orientation occurs on day shift and requires availability for the entire week
  • Must be a team player

This position offers an opportunity to work in a specialized step-down unit with a focus on neuro and trauma patients in a supportive, safety-conscious environment.
