Required Experience

• Minimum 2 years of core experience in the specialty
• Level 1 Trauma and teaching hospital experience required
• Prior travel experience required for ED and Neuro ICU (not explicitly required for this role)

Contract Length

• Minimum contract length: 13 weeks

Certifications & Exams

• BLS and ACLS certification required
• Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam required 24-48 hours prior to acceptance (max 2 attempts)
• Day 1 pass/fail SIMs Lab (Foley catheter insertion & central line dressing changes) required
• Must pass dysrhythmia exam prior to acceptance; failure results in 6-month disqualification within CommonSpirit AZ and Sacramento Region

Orientation & Onboarding

• Weekly orientations on Mondays (except holiday weeks)
• Onboarding documents must be complete by 1pm CST Wednesday before start date
• Floor-specific orientation: 2 days on the floor

Facility & Unit Details

• Unit: CTICU/CVICU
• Unit size: 24 beds
• Patient ratio: 1:1 to 1:2 (high number of 1:1 assignments)
• Nurse aides: 2 Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) on days and nights with high census
• Charge nurse role available (no patient assignment)
• EMR system: Cerner
• Telemetry system: Phillips
• Hospitalist/Intensivist coverage: Intensivist on-site during days, on-call at night
• IV team: No; strong IV skills required
• Respiratory Therapy: 24/7 coverage
• Pharmacy: 24/7 coverage, including transplant patients
• Shifts: 12-hour shifts, 7am-7pm and nights
• Weekend requirement: 3 weekend shifts in a 4-week schedule (4 total weekend shifts per 4 weeks)
• Holidays: Scheduled into rotation based on unit needs
• Scrub color: Navy

Patient Population & Care

• High acuity cardiac surgery recovery patients
• Common diagnoses and procedures:

  • Cardiac surgery recovery
  • Impella devices
  • Intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP)
  • Continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT)
  • Lung transplant
  • Thoracic surgery
  • ECMO
  • Esophagectomy, lobectomy, pneumonectomy
  • Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR)
• High number of bedside procedures including bronchoscopy, Swan-Ganz catheter insertion, epidurals
• Travelers with IABP and CABG experience can manage these patients

Additional Requirements & Notes

• Must have natural hair color; no facial piercings allowed
• Male candidates must be clean-shaven for fit testing
• Travelers must have their own vehicle if part of travel teams
• Cannot work two contracts simultaneously within Dignity AZ
• Must have been off CommonSpirit permanent staff for 12 months to be eligible for travel assignment
• Teaching hospital with nursing students present
• Float requirements: float to other ICUs and all telemetry units; patient ratio 4:1 on telemetry; float to Westgate campus if requested
• Parking: assigned parking with shuttle service; night shift parking in garage

This position is suited for experienced ICU nurses with strong cardiac and trauma skills, comfortable with high acuity patients and bedside procedures, and able to meet strict certification and exam requirements.
