Physical Therapist (PT) - Outpatient (Days)

Job Overview

• Primarily outpatient setting with occasional float to acute care.
• Responsible for patient-focused care including assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation in accordance with physical therapy standards and physician orders.
• Delegates responsibilities to Physical Therapist Assistants and Aides.
• Functions as case manager for assigned cases.

Key Responsibilities

• Evaluate patient function using formal and informal testing to assess skeletal, neurological, respiratory, and cardiovascular status.
• Develop and update goal-specific treatment plans based on patient assessment and tolerance.
• Educate patients, families, and caregivers on pathology, prognosis, treatment rationale, and home education programs.
• Supervise Physical Therapist Assistants, Aides, Home Health Aides, and students per regulatory standards.
• Recommend and assist in securing adaptive/supportive equipment for patients.
• Document patient responses, treatment changes, and complete billing documentation in compliance with policies and regulatory agencies.
• Participate in team conferences, interdisciplinary meetings, and program development.
• Promote physical therapy services within the community.
• Maintain confidentiality of patient and organizational information.
• Demonstrate competency in Microsoft Windows and participate in ongoing learning opportunities.

Physical and Mental Requirements

• Medium physical demand level:

  • Occasionally lift/carry 21-50 lbs.
  • Frequently lift/carry 20 lbs.
  • Constantly lift/carry 10 lbs.
• Ability to sit, stand, walk for long periods; frequent postural changes (stooping, kneeling, crouching).
• Exposure to communicable diseases; must use personal protective equipment correctly.
• Ability to handle stressful situations including trauma, grief, and death.
• Overall dexterity required for handling, reaching, grasping, fingering, and feeling.
• Must follow bloodborne pathogen and TB testing protocols.

Required Qualifications

Education

• Bachelor’s Degree (required)

Licensure/Certification

• Physical Therapist license (required)
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification highly preferred within 1 month of hire or transfer

Experience

• Successful completion of orientation and new hire competency specific to the employer.
• No explicit years of experience stated; however, standard PT licensure and competency expected.

Skills and Abilities

• Effective verbal and written communication skills in English.
• Ability to work independently with strong problem-solving, organizational, and time management skills.
• Ability to demonstrate and teach treatment routines to professional and non-professional individuals.
