Registered Nurse – Outpatient Surgery

Location: Augusta, Georgia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract

Job Overview

  • Work as an RN operating room circulator in an outpatient surgery setting.
  • Patient population ranges from pediatrics to geriatrics.
  • Specialties include retina surgery, total hip/knee replacements, hand surgery, breast oncology and reconstruction, ENT, laparoscopic cholecystectomy, hernia repairs, and podiatry.
  • Typical shift: Day shift, 4 days per week, 9 hours per day (6:00 AM – 3:30 PM).
  • Shift variations include 6:00-3:30, 6:30-4:00, 8:00-5:30, and 8:30-6:00.
  • Ratio: 1 RN to 4 patients; 5 operating rooms with an average daily census of 18.
  • Unit systems used: Epic and Pyxis.
  • Scrub color provided by the facility.
  • No weekends required.
  • Floating is rare.
  • No formal call, but may be required to stay late ("dots" and "double dots") depending on room completion status.
  • Holiday work expectations: If 1 major holiday falls during assignment, must work it; if 2 holidays, must work both; if 3 holidays, must work 2. Major holidays include Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving/Black Friday, Christmas Eve/Day, New Year’s Eve/Day, and Spring Break (April 4-12).
  • Return to office (RTO) maximum 7 days.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Georgia.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • Minimum 1 year of operating room circulator experience in the intraoperative setting.
  • Minimum 1 year of oncology experience, with oncology experience within the last year.
  • Experience in outpatient surgery.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.

Certifications & Competencies

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
  • Advanced certifications such as ACLS, PALS, NRP, EFM, or others may be required depending on specialty or unit; verify based on assignment specifics.
  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required by agency.
  • Color blindness testing required; alternative assessments available if needed.
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required if applicable to specialty.

Health & Background Requirements

  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 60 days of start (including amphetamines, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, cocaine, opiates, methadone, PCP, propoxyphene, THC).
  • Physical exam within 12 months of start.
  • Immunizations/vaccinations required or documentation thereof:
    • TB test (PPD, QGold, or TSpot) within 12 months or negative chest X-ray if prior positive.
    • TB questionnaire updated annually.
    • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) – 2 vaccines or positive titer with boosters if needed.
    • Varicella – 2 vaccines or positive titer with boosters if needed.
    • Hepatitis B surface antibody titer or signed declination.
    • Flu vaccine or signed declination required during flu season (Nov 1 – Mar 31).
    • TDAP highly recommended but not required.
  • Background check required within 30 days of start, including education verification and criminal history.
  • Skills checklist updated within 12 months.
  • Verification of most recent work history required (can be pending with proof of processing).
  • Two clinical references required.

Additional Information

  • Non-billable orientation hours depend on contract length (e.g., 8 hours for 8-week assignment).
  • Full compliance with all documentation and credentialing required to start on time; delays may result in assignment start being pushed back by two weeks.
  • Clinical screening will be conducted to determine fit before final approval.
  • Locals accepted at the same rate.
