Job Opportunity: Certified OR Tech / Surgical Tech (CST)
Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Position Details
- Specialty: Surgical Services (Ambulatory OR)
- Shift Options:
- 3 shifts of 12 hours (6:30 AM – 7:00 PM)
- 4 shifts of 10 hours (6:30 AM – 5:00 PM)
- One late week per 4 weeks to complete cases
- No weekends required
- No on-call duties
- Possibility of floating within Perioperative facility as needed
- Block scheduling may be accommodated at manager’s discretion
- Number of ORs: 9
- First-time travelers not accepted
- Local candidates accepted within a 50-mile radius
- Traveler may be called off up to 10 hours per 2-week period
- May be required to precept a care team member in the OR
- During hurricane season (June–November), all staff may be assigned to emergency response teams
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of experience in Surgical Services
- Certifications:
- NBSTSA (National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting)
- BLS (Basic Life Support) – AHA or ARC accepted
- Radiation badge must be provided by the staffing company (required for this role)
- Experience preferred in Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, ENT, Gynecology, Genitourinary, Endocrine, or Surgical Oncology
- Prior travel experience not explicitly required
Licensure & Certifications
- Must have an active, unencumbered South Carolina license or compact licensure as applicable
- Primary source verification required
- NURSYS verification required for RNs/LPNs if applicable
- ACLS, PALS, TNCC, NIH Stroke, CHEMO, EFM certifications as applicable to specialty/unit (verify with recruiter)
- Fit test for N95 mask required within 90 days prior to start and annually thereafter
- Radiation badge required and must be obtained before starting clinical work
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Background check covering last 7 years of residence/employment
- Drug screening: 10-panel urine drug screen within 90 days of start
- Physical exam: Initial and updated annually, attesting to ability to meet physical demands
- Immunizations and titers:
- Tdap within 10 years or declination form
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) positive titers or vaccination/booster documentation
- Varicella positive titer or vaccination/booster documentation
- Hepatitis B titer, vaccination series, or declination
- Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days or chest x-ray if prior positive
- COVID-19 vaccination highly preferred; if declined, must complete vaccination declination form
- Seasonal flu vaccination required during flu season or medical/religious exemption accepted (no declinations)
- Color blindness testing required prior to start
- Competency exams and medication/pharmacology competency as applicable
- Employment history verification for last 3 clinical employers
- Clear, passport-style photo for badge required before start
Facility Specifics
- Orientation modules must be completed prior to start; failure to complete will result in being sent home
- Radiation badge process may take 5-7 days; candidates cannot start clinical work without it
- Travelers must upload vaccination records and required documents into the facility’s system prior to start
- Physical assessment form required for sterile processing techs (if applicable)
Additional Notes
- Travelers should be prepared for possible emergency response assignments during hurricane season (June–November)
- Approval of requested time off (RTO) is based on facility needs and must be submitted with the application
- Floating within the perioperative facility may be required within scope of practice
This position is ideal for experienced Certified OR Techs / Surgical Techs with at least 2 years of surgical services experience who are comfortable working in a fast-paced ambulatory OR setting without weekend or on-call requirements.
