Medical Surgical Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Job

Location: Charleston, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Overview

  • Adult medical-surgical oncology unit with 29 beds, including palliative care, family education, urology, and telemetry patients.
  • Shift: Day shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 AM - 7:00 PM).
  • Every other weekend required.
  • Patient ratios: 4-5:1 (day), 5-6:1 (night).
  • Float within scope to meet facility needs.
  • Blocked schedule requests may be accommodated.
  • 36 or 48-hour contract options available.
  • 100-mile radius rule for travel distance (75-99 miles requires facility approval).
  • Free parking for travelers.
  • Charting system: Cerner.
  • Scrub color: Royal Blue/White for RNs.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in West Virginia
  • Minimum 1 year of Med Surg / Telemetry experience within the last year
  • BLS issued by American Heart Association (AHA only, no pending or onsite completion allowed)
  • ONCC or ONS Oncology certification
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Skills including:
    • Central line draws
    • Ports
    • PCA pumps
    • Bone marrow aspiration assistance
    • Pleurx chest tubes

Health & Safety Requirements

  • Flu vaccine required during flu season (October 1 - March 31) unless medically exempt with documentation.
  • COVID-19 vaccination is not required; proof of vaccination or signed declination accepted.
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 3 months of start.
  • Tdap vaccination required (given after age 11). Medical or religious exemptions accepted with approved documentation.
  • Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: Proof of immunity or vaccination required.
  • Hepatitis B: Documentation of immunity or vaccination series required.
  • Annual fit mask testing required (3M N95 1860 Small/Regular or Aura 9205). PAPR accommodations available if fit test fails.
  • Drug screen within 30 days of start, including a comprehensive panel (amphetamines, barbiturates, cocaine, opiates, PCP, benzodiazepines, methadone, propoxyphene). No placeholders or pending results accepted.
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, signed by a licensed provider, confirming good health and ability to perform job duties.

Compliance & Documentation

  • Background check: 7-year criminal history within 30 days of start, including SSN trace, sex offender search, national and international checks if applicable.
  • SAM and OIG checks must be completed independently within 30 days of start and updated annually.
  • Social Security card and valid driver’s license required.
  • NURSYS primary source license verification within 30 days of start.
  • Pass/fail testing required for nursing candidates: EKG exam, medication calculation exam, blood administration test (two attempts allowed, third requires approval).
  • Annual competency exams and color blindness testing required.
  • Annual stroke education CEUs required depending on unit assignment (4-6 hours).
  • Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certification required for certain units (ER, Surgical & Trauma ICU, Trauma Stepdown, Behavioral Health).
  • Orientation: 2 days (Thursday and Friday), including Cerner Infusion Management training.
  • Required facility-specific documents include dress code policy, blood administration policy, math calculation review, EKG review, time and attendance, medical release, vaccination exemption forms, state liability and time gap forms.

Additional Notes

  • Candidates without oncology experience may be considered if strong in other areas.
  • Holiday requests for time off limited to no more than 1 of the 3 major holidays.
  • Permanent employees cannot return as travelers for 2 years after last permanent day worked at this facility.
  • Candidates must submit a single PDF containing: profile/work history, specialty skills checklist, minimum 2 manager/charge nurse references (within 2 years), RN license verification, driver’s license, and social security card.
  • Inservice training modules must be completed 1 week prior to start (approx. 4 hours). Returning candidates may not need to redo if not expired.

This position offers an opportunity to work in a major teaching hospital with a Level IV Trauma Center designation, providing care to a diverse adult patient population in a supportive environment.
