Registered Nurse - PCU (Telemetry)

Location: Kansas City, Missouri

Unit & Work Environment

• 24-bed Intermediate Care Unit (PCU) handling intermediate medical patients and surgery overflow (e.g., TURPS, laparoscopic cholecystectomy, appendectomy, hernia repair, eye and oral surgeries, diabetic teaching, wound care).
• Fast-paced unit essential for patient throughput from ED and OR.
• Patient-to-nurse ratio typically 1:5; may flex to 1:6 occasionally, requiring acceptance of extra patients.
• Work settings include Medical-Surgical/Telemetry, Cardiac Telemetry, ER Holding, Neuro Stepdown, PCU/DOU/IMC/Stepdown.
• Floating within scope to other departments, units, or facilities may be required.
• Weekend shifts required: 8 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule period (Friday/Saturday/Sunday combination).
• Holiday shifts and Charge RN assignments as needed.
• Block scheduling is not accommodated.
• Local candidates not accepted; home address must be at least 75 miles from facility.
• No on-call requirement.

Required Qualifications

• Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Missouri.
• Minimum of 1 year of recent Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year.
• Telemetry nursing experience.
• BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).

Shift Details

• Day shift: 6:45 AM to 7:15 PM (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each).
• Guaranteed minimum of 3 shifts per 13-week period.

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

• Government-issued ID required (e.g., driver’s license).
• Criminal background check within 6 months, including statewide and nationwide searches, sex offender registry, and international searches if applicable.
• Quarterly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks.
• Education verification of highest nursing degree required prior to start.
• Primary source verification of Missouri RN license via NURSYS.
• Unit-specific competency exams including dysrhythmia/EKG competency (minimum 80% pass rate).
• Color blindness testing within 12 months of start.
• Unit-specific skills checklist within 1 year of start.
• Employment application and professional references (two required, supervisors preferred).
• Physical exam within 1 year of start.
• Drug testing within 1 year of start, including a comprehensive panel (amphetamines, benzodiazepines, cocaine, opiates, etc.), must not expire during assignment.
• Annual fit mask (N95) testing required; facial hair must allow proper fit.
• Immunizations and health screenings:

  • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year.
  • Tdap vaccine or declination (expires every 10 years).
  • Measles, mumps, rubella, varicella immunity or vaccination/declination as applicable.
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season (Sept 30 - April 1).
• Facility-specific documents including HIPAA acknowledgement, confidentiality form, latex allergy questionnaire, hand hygiene and fingernail policies, dress code policy, and regulatory compliance education (annual).
• Badge photo required (head and shoulders, white background, no obstructions, taken within 6 months).

Additional Notes

• First-time travelers are not accepted for this assignment.
• Return-to-Office (RTO) restrictions: no more than 7 days off.
• Facility uses Epic for charting.
• Parking is free.
• The hospital is a 5-time Magnet-recognized tertiary care teaching hospital and Level 1 Trauma center.

This position is ideal for experienced Telemetry RNs comfortable with a fast-paced PCU environment, skilled in cardiac monitoring, IV therapy, and managing intermediate care patients with diverse medical and surgical needs.
