Neuro ICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Saint Louis, Missouri
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Shift: Night (4 shifts of 12 hours each, 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Specialty: Neuro ICU
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:2
  • Start date: Approximately 3-4 weeks from assignment, based on compliance tier
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend
  • Floating: May float within scope to meet facility needs
  • Block scheduling: Not accommodated
  • Local candidates: Not accepted within 75-mile radius
  • Pending license accepted
  • Maximum requested time off (RTO): No more than 7 days per 13-week contract
  • Guaranteed hours: Yes, minimum 3 shifts per 13-week contract
  • Must pass Relias EKG exam focusing on interpretation/management of dysrhythmias

Patient Population & Unit Details

  • Patient diagnoses include ischemic strokes (post-thrombectomy, post-tPA), neuromuscular disorders, seizure disorders, CNS infections, hemorrhagic strokes, subdural/epidural hematomas, ICP monitoring (EVDs/bolts), neurotrauma (GSW, MVC, spinal cord injuries)
  • Special procedures: Vasoactive medication administration, central line and arterial line management, ICP monitoring, CRRT, hypothermia/hyperthermia management, spinal precautions
  • Special equipment used: EVD, bolt
  • Stroke education: Complete 10 hours total during orientation (NIHSS can satisfy 3 hours; ACLS renewal/new provider points count toward hours)

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Missouri
  • Minimum 2 years of Neuro ICU nursing experience, including experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification

Compliance & Competency Requirements

  • Must pass Relias Basic Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam for Neuro ICU
  • Unit-specific competency exams required and must be updated annually
  • Medication/pharmacology competency exam required
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start
  • Drug screening within 1 year of start, including panels for amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cocaine, methadone, opiates, oxycodone, PCP; must remain valid throughout assignment
  • Fit mask testing required and must be renewed annually (facial hair must allow proper fit)
  • Immunizations and health screenings required:
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray (2 negative PPDs or T-Spot/Q-Gold within 1 year)
    • Tdap vaccine or declination (expires every 10 years)
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella immunity or vaccination/declination as applicable
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season (Sept 30 – Apr 1)
  • Background checks required within 6 months of start, including criminal background, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG, and state-specific searches
  • Education verification of highest nursing degree required
  • Two professional references required (supervisors preferred)

  • Total staffed beds: 1,266

  • Orientation includes completion of stroke education hours and facility-specific modules (approximately 16 hours) via online platform
  • Parking: Monthly parking passes available for a fee; free parking for straight night shifts in employee parking; day/night rotation requires paid parking pass

  • No on-call requirement
  • Badge photo required within 6 months of start date (head and shoulders, white background, no obstructions)
  • Must complete facility-required documents prior to start, including HIPAA acknowledgement, confidentiality form, hand hygiene policy, fingernail policy, dress code policy, latex allergy questionnaire, and regulatory compliance education
  • Vehicle registration form required for day shift workers
  • Must adhere to facility policies or risk being sent home from shifts
