Job Summary

Provide safe, competent, quality care to ICU patients using nursing theory, research, and evidence-based practice. Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement patient care plans, prioritize patient needs, and educate patients and caregivers.


Key Responsibilities

Patient Care

  • Deliver care based on Relationship Centered Care and nursing process.
  • Assess and evaluate patient needs using critical thinking.
  • Integrate assessment and intervention skills in nursing care.
  • Collaborate with healthcare team on care plans.
  • Prioritize patient care including teaching, rounding, coaching, discharge planning, and delegation.
  • Educate patients and caregivers on care plans, health promotion, and disease prevention.
  • Communicate professionally with patients, families, and care team members.
  • Manage assignments within Modified Primary Nursing care delivery model.

Patient Experience

  • Role model Relationship Centered Care practices (e.g., Admission Welcome, Bedside Shift Report, Purposeful Hourly Rounding).
  • Respect patient values, preferences, cultural diversity, and expressed needs.
  • Establish therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
  • Use evidence-based practices to understand patient perceptions of care.
  • Address patient/family concerns and escalate as needed.
  • Demonstrate caring, respect, compassion, empathy, and active listening.

Quality and Safety

  • Practice safe, patient-centered care and identify barriers to quality.
  • Demonstrate clinical skills essential to patient safety.
  • Participate in process improvement and quality initiatives.
  • Engage in peer and institutional review processes.
  • Collaborate on quality improvement projects and nursing research.
  • Follow high reliability principles to avoid high-risk behaviors.
  • Escalate safety hazards per institutional protocols.
  • Document nursing practice to support quality and performance improvement.

Operations

  • Perform charge nurse duties as assigned.
  • Coordinate supply and inventory management with leadership.
  • Escalate material or staffing shortages appropriately.
  • Use patient-focused, cost-effective approaches to resource utilization.
  • Document accurately and thoroughly per regulatory and legal standards.
  • Facilitate patient throughput during shifts.

  • Support clinical colleagues, patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  • Advance clinical competence from novice to expert.
  • Maintain a professional image and communicate with respect and empathy.
  • Apply ethical principles in decision-making.

Requirements

  • Current New York State RN License
  • BLS and ACLS certification
  • Minimum 2 years RN experience
  • Minimum 2 years critical care/telemetry experience
  • EPIC experience highly preferred
  • Travel experience: 1 year preferred for travel positions (not required for Per Diem)

Unit & Schedule Details

  • Average Unit Census: 8 patients
  • Beds per Unit: 8
  • Staffing Ratio: 1 nurse to 2 patients
  • Schedule: 3 shifts of 12 hours, every other weekend, variable shifts

Contract Length

  • Approximately 11 weeks (75 days rounded to nearest week)
